Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter Problem

    Hello All!

    I have a simple parent/child set. I need to print a report of the child for certain records. The parent/child are linked by a field called "Conid".

    In writing the filter expression I am getting what I consider to be, strange errors.

    If I use: query.filter="conid=consumers->conid" the report works, but gives me more records than I need.

    If I use: query.filter= "isbilled = \"No\"" (where isbilled is a field in the child), it works, but gives me all of the records where this is so.

    If I try to combine them like: query.filter="conid=consumers->conid.and.isbilled = \"No\"" Alpha rejects this as an invalid filter.

    Why is this happening and how can I get this to work?

    Thanks.

    Re: Filter Problem

    Charles,

    Please try this:

    query.filter="conid=consumers->conid .and. isbilled = 'No' "

    I am assuming that isbilled is character and not boolean, is that correct?

    and tell me if there is an error

      Re: Filter Problem

      Charles,

      Often an easy solution when the desired filter includes fields from both parent and child tables (or child only) is to create a new set, inverting the relationship and using a one to one link. Do this, then base your report on the new set, using a filter that addresses the new parent table directly.

        Is that certain parent records or certain child records? Or both?

        The report works? Not sure what that means.... you are testing a filter. Did the report deliver filtered records... ie did the filter work? I doubt it. That filter doesn't look any different than 1=1. I'm guessing you got more records than you needed because you got all the records.. maybe.

        Lets start with what you are trying to filter for... single parent and select child records, or something else?

          Re: Filter Problem

          First, Dr. Gary. I tried that expression also (actually first) and I got an error.

          Second, Tom. Humm. Sounds like a big workaround, but I always bow to you, the guru of filters. (I've used your examples for years with great success!)

          Third, Mike. Let me explain more fully. The parent dbf is called "Consumers" and is related to the child "Timehours" (One-to-Many) through a character filed called "Conid".

          I have a button on the set-form I am using to call the report. I need to print the Timehours records for just certain Timehours records for that particular consumer.

            Some additional information:

            I got it to work by using the Alpha code plus an adjustment to the filter...

            Code:
            'Print a report, label, letter, form or browse layout. You can specify which records to print.

            'Check to see if you are running the script from within a Form
            dim flag_error as l
            flag_error = .f.
            if is_object(topparent.this) then
            	p = topparent.this

            	if eval_valid("P:CONTROL_BROWSE2:Conid.value") then
            		DELETE Parameter1
            		'Set the Parameter variable to the object's .value property
            		Parameter1 = eval("P:CONTROL_BROWSE2:Conid.value")
            	else
            		flag_error = .t.
            	end if
            else
            	flag_error = .t.
            end if

            if flag_error then
            	ui_msg_box("Error","CONTROL_BROWSE2:Conid does not exist. This script cannot be run in this context.",UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
            	end
            end if

            filter = "conid = [varC->parameter1].and.isbilled='No'"  '<+++++ I added in the .and. isbilled='No'
            query.filter = replace_parameters(filter,local_variables())
            query.order = ""

            'Prompt user whether to print, or preview the layout. Set default to Print
            prompt_result = ui_get_print_or_preview("Print")
            If prompt_result = "Print" then

            :Report.Print("DCF_Voucher1",query.filter,query.order)

            Else if prompt_result = "Preview" then
            	:Report.Preview("DCF_Voucher1",query.filter,query.order)
            End if
            Inside this code snippet I added to the filter ".and.isbilled='No'" Seems to be working now.

            Thanks,

            Charlie

              Did you try inverting the set?
              That would have been my first option.

                Re: Filter Problem

                Under context that you described, all the code in the action scripting that performs all the checks should not be needed.

                Code:
                'acquire parent link value
                   dim vconid as C
                   vconid =  parentform:CONTROL_BROWSE2:Conid.value

                'create filter
                  dim vfilter as C
                  vfilter="conid = "+quote(vconid) + " .and. isbilled=\"NO\""
                  query.filter = vfilter
                  query.order = ""

                'Prompt user whether to print, or preview the layout. Set default to Print
                     prompt_result = ui_get_print_or_preview("Print")
                            if prompt_result = "Print" then
                                 :Report.Print("DCF_Voucher1",query.filter,query.order)
                            else if prompt_result = "Preview" then
                	          :Report.Preview("DCF_Voucher1",query.filter,query.order)
                            end if
