Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

That's also an option I forgot about. But Topparent.name(1) should suffice for this UDF

    what about a_form_current?
I seems to returns the form name with or without underscores, to whatever it is in control panel.

Thank you Tom I didn't see that parameter for the name method.

Ted I tried the alpha help file and found it too limiting. If I get this UDF to work as I expect, it will make creating and editing the help file much easier. Adding the helpid field also allows me to link the help to to the table I use to create my XML Toolbox menu where some menu items are not form related.

Robin, check the help file docs on the object.name method. The optional parameter (1) may be what you're looking for.

This sounds a lot more complex than using the built in help options Robin.
I usually put the help topic in the Form Properties, and the ? Button opens it.
Is it because you have so many forms and have created a UDF to handle the process?

    started a topic ui_get_layout_name vs object_name_normalize

    ui_get_layout_name vs object_name_normalize

I need to get the actual name of an open form as it appears in the control panel that also populates a field in another table for a lookup function:

Ex 1: "Knit Order" (go away Cal...I have too many of these naming conventions to change now )

With the form opened topparent.name() returns:

    Ex 2: "Knit_Order"

I realize I could use object_name_normalize() to initially populate the field in the other table so that I can search for Ex 2 consistently. But I find it curious that a function like ui_get_layout_name() returns Ex 1 just as I would prefer - only I am not wanting the user interaction.

Surely there is a way to do this, since some forms I have named with the underscore, but most I have not.

What would the opposite of NOT getting the normalized name be????

Also in the table where this value is to be found, I need to open that form using this field reference and the 'real' name is what the other script uses ( eg. Form.view("Knit Order")

My application is for a help file that when referencing a form has a FORM_REF field which
A5.form_enum() populates just like Ex 1. So now when the Knit Order form is opened, my help button looks up the form_ref name and finds its help topic ID.

It sure sounded simple when I thought of it...
