Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    update to yield a space character

    I have an update function that I need to have it create a space character.
    It yields nothing in the field to be updated.

    The other fields that are being updated work fine.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks.

    Have you tried putting an ascii character value in it?
    Q. Why a blank?

      Native Alpha Five table?

      Blank space or underscore character ?

      Code not shown. Might be helpful to show us the function.

      Blank spaces don't show up in text fields, of course. What are you expecting to see? A character field in your DBF will contain nothing but blanks if the field is "empty". DBF format is for fixed width fields. Not sure it makes sense to try to create a space character in an empty character field.

      I must be missing something.

        Re: update to yield a space character

        I'm trying to convert normal A5 data into a format that a cash register system can read.
        Their system uses comma delimiters but they want a combined date/time field with a space between the date and time
        My data has separate fields for date and time.

        My idea was to define each delimiter separately and use commas for most of their fields and a space for this combo-field.

          Not enough information, John. Are you scripting this or using an operation? If a script, show it to us. If an operation, show us a screenshot.

          Or attach a sample database as is generally suggested.

          Example using table field values.

          Code:
          tbl = table.open("cmitem")
          tbl.fetch_next()
          ? tbl.DESC
          = "GREEN PEPPERS FRESH DICED "

          ? tbl.PACK
          = "1.1 LB       "

          ? alltrim(tbl.DESC)+" "+alltrim(tbl.PACK)
          = "GREEN PEPPERS FRESH DICED 1.1 LB"

          tbl.close()
          There can be only one.

            here's my update operation.

            On exporting to an ASCII file, I want my date and time with a space between them.
            I'm getting this: 06/12/201411:41 but I want this: 06/12/2014 11:41

              Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong perspective. I'll try using a different/unusual character and then run and find and replace to place a blank instead of my character.

                Re: update to yield a space character

                I don't think you can export without some character as a field delimiter it seems you would wind up with double commas between fields?

                Try it this way

                tbl = table.open("yourtablename")
                fil = file.create("c:\temp\outputfilename.asc",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
                while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                ln = tbl.field1+","+tbl.field2+","+tbl.datefield+" "+tbl.timefield+","+tbl.field5
                fil.write_line(ln)
                tbl.fetch_next()
                end while
                fil.flush()
                fil.close()
                tbl.close()

                You should substitute actual field names and you can add as many as you want.

                  So date+ " "+the time bit you want doesn't work?

                    Right, instead of a space-character, it yields nothing

                      Re: update to yield a space character

                      Suppose the table from which you are exporting has various fields and a "del" field and a "space" field. The "space" field should be defined as character, width 1. You update the table putting "," in the del field.
                      If your export specifies ~ as the field delimiter and you export

                      fieldname1
                      del
                      fieldname2
                      del
                      fieldname3
                      del
                      datefieldname
                      space
                      timefieldname
                      del
                      fieldname4

                      The output should be

                      value1~,~value2~,~value3~,~datevalue~ ~timevalue~,~value4
                      value1~,~value2~,~value3~,~datevalue~ ~timevalue~,~value4
                      value1~,~value2~,~value3~,~datevalue~ ~timevalue~,~value4
                      value1~,~value2~,~value3~,~datevalue~ ~timevalue~,~value4

                      If you search and replace ~ with nothing you should wind up with what you want. Don't know what program you are using to do the search and replace but wordpad supports replacing with nothing.
                      There can be only one.

                        date()+space(1)+time("0h:0m")
                        or

                        Code:
                        ?date()+space(1)+time("0h:0m")

                        comes out correct in the interactive window

                            No but you can do this;
                            DTOC(THIS_DATE)+" "+TIME("0h:0m", THIS_TIME)

                            I made an additional field in the table which is a Calculated construct of the THIS_DATE fields which is just Date, and the Short Time field THIS_TIME.
                            When exported, the data in Notepad looks like this.

                            13/06/2014 09:05 The spaces are there. You may have to play with the Delimeters.

                              Nice work Ted. Old School. This form of concatenation was typical throughout Alpha Five long ago. Now days in many places Alpha auto-converts mixed data types, but apparently this "new" functionality hasn't been incorporated in the export routines.
