Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    This should be simple....

Trying to redesign a new set to fix a problem in the older set. The current set is based on two tables. Invoice head which is the header in the set and the purchases.dbf. Currently links on a single column INVOICE which is the invoice number field. I need to be able to not only have the invoice number filled in on the child table (purchases) but also the date from the parent table Purchead.dbf I can only seem to set this up as a single link which does not bring the date to the child table

I'm trying to build the ste so that with each new invoice as products are entered into the set the child table reveives both the invoice number from the parent table but also the date from the parent table

Why? Is the invoice number not sufficient? Given the invoice number you should always be able to get the date with a lookup at the worst.

    Seems to work here.

    There can be only one.

I agree with Stan. It's best to do it with either a set or a lookup. If you need the date in a report that is currently based on just the Purchases (child) table, you can always create a set that includes the "parent" table as a 1:1 child. In other words, a "reversed" set -- Purchases->InvoiceHead.

Putting summary data in a parent table for the purpose of reporting can be done but I would consider this a last ditch solution only to be used if absolutely necessary due to speed or "I simply can't make this work" issues (although I can't think of a reason it couldn't be made to work) BECAUSE you then have to deal with the issues of keeping the data correct when editing child records and, even worse, when deleting child records. I know your situation isn't much of a "summary" but wanted to add this as 'food for thought' - been there, done that, learned my lesson.
