Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Three lines:
    Define your default server folder (path)
    Code:
    syspath= "C:\Users\Ray\Downloads\" '** change this to your own default server folder name
    Make the file selection
    Code:
    ffind=ui_get_file("get File","") ' lets say selected file = "C:\Users\Ray\Downloads\Alpha_QuickViewSetup.pdf"
    fname=strtran(ffind,syspath,"")   '= "Alpha_QuickViewSetup.pdf"

    GETFIL is "picked_path_var" and "system_var" is PATH. In my initial explanation I tried to make is easy and in my attempt I think I made it confusing.

    Re: Need help with trimming a specific count or number of characters

    This whole thing is to tie pdf images to a 14 field database.
    GETFIL contains the entire front to back, side to side path where the image is stored in a "UNC" format.
    When I push a button it activates a form that has the PATH variable and it stores that variable.
    It then prompts with a browse window so I can browse to the location of the pdf image. When I click on it it stores GETFIL value.
    I then simply need to subtract the PATH variable value from the GETFIL variable value because between the 2 there would be redundancy if I don't remove path. I need to remove the PATH because I need to keep the server path in a variable in the event we want to move the images to another server or location so none of the database has full path hard coded.

    I hope this explains better.

    I went in and modified my profile. I am very new to the forum, not new to Alpha but not anywhere as good and many of the users her.

    Sorry. I assumed you were showing us the entire script. But you did not. So, I guessed wrong.

    When you select the filename what does GETFIL contain? in post 7 you said it contained "pickled_path_var".
    When you specify a field and retrieve its value into PATH, what does PATH contain? in post 7 you said it contained "system_var".

    Color me confused.

    Later...

    Rick, this msg board supports private messages. to enable this feature you must change your msg board profile. You might consider doing this so folks can communicate with you through the board, but offline, if you see what I mean.

    Re: Need help with trimming a specific count or number of characters

    GETFIL is acquired with the "prompt for Filename" action that I have added before this script.
    PATH is acquired using the "get Fild Values (into variables) action.

    should I be using something else?

    In pasting the line above into the script is said it could not find any of the variables. (GETFIL or PATH)

    Again, thanks so much for your help.

    It looks like maybe GETFIL and PATH are objects (text boxes ?) in your form. Is that right? If so, you're retrieving the values from the text boxes incorrectly.

    expression_result = STRTRAN(parentform:GETFIL.TEXT, parentform:PATH.TEXT,"")

    Re: Need help with trimming a specific count or number of characters

    On paper it looks right but below is the expression that I built and the result it returns to me is simply the "picked_path_var"

    I my script the "pickled_path_var" is GETFIL and the "system_var" is PATH

    'Set 'Value' property of 'Path' in Form 'sys' .
    DIM form_name as c
    if is_object(topparent.this) then
    form_name = topparent.name()+".this"
    else
    form_name = ""
    end if

    DELETE expression_result
    expression_result = eval("STRTRAN(Var->GETFIL,Var->PATH,'')",form_name)
    parentform:Path.value = expression_result

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

    I want to accept picked_path_var and remove only the part that matches exactly that is in the system_var variable. So in short subtract system_var from picked_path_var and the result to be only:

    folder5\filename.ext

    That is all I want to store with the accompanying info so if in the future we change servers or whatever I can simply change the the system_var and the images will work from the new location.

    Hope that helps.

    Agree with Al. You're short on details.

    Maybe you want

    Code:
    path_variable = "C:\temp\images\testjpg.jpg"

    ? file.filename_parse(path_variable,"D")
    = "C:"
    ? file.filename_parse(path_variable,"DP")
    = "C:\temp\images\"
    ? file.filename_parse(path_variable,"N")
    = "testjpg"
    ? file.filename_parse(path_variable,"NE")
    = "testjpg.jpg"
    ? file.filename_parse(path_variable,"DPNE")
    = "C:\temp\images\testjpg.jpg"

  • Need help with trimming a specific count or number of characters

    I have a script that I am picking a path of a file and placing the variable in a field for later retrieval. I have the server and good portion of the path stored in a separate variable table just in case the location of the images changed or something. I want to pick the path into a variable and then subtract the matching portion of the path from what I just picked. I am thinking I can use len(field) to get the length of the path variable but there is where I am not finding a command.
Working...
