Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with list on report

    I am trying to create a list on a report from a single dbf. From what I have seen in previous msgs on the topic, this should work. My db is for comics and I am trying to get a list of issue #'s in the following format on the report.

    comic name #, #, #, #, etc.....
    comic name #, #, #, #, etc.....

    Each comic has its own record with the issue # in the record. Each record contains the comic name, issue #, and various other info about it. The comic name for each record can be duplicated several times. There is no set limit to how many comics will have the same name.
    I got the report to list all the comics but not like listed above. The other msgs on this topic suggested this code to build the list in a group footer.

    issueno = strtran(*collect(issue_no,grp->comic_title),crlf(),", ")

    Now this seems to only display the first 2 records, but from what I gather it should display all of them. I changed the field names to match mine obviously, just used the syntax in a calculated field. I tried to put this in the detail section and in the group footer, and the report footer, but the same results no mater where it is.

    Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong?

    It should go in the group footer as you indicate. Did you size the calculated field in the group footer wide enough to display more than two numbers and format the object with enough characters to do the same?

      That was what I missed, even though i resized the field, I did,t realize the calculated field would be limited in size. Is their a way around the display size on the field?

        The display width and format character qty are properties of the calculated field object, thus changeable. Alpha can't always guess what they should be.

          What about sorting the list that is captured. Currently the field issue_no is a character field, but I don't think that should matter. Right now it displays in record # order, ant i tried to change it to sort ascending on issue_no, but no luck. I'm sure there is something Imam missing on getting it to display sorted in an ascending fashion.

          Thanks for the help btw everyone.

            You probably want

            issueno = sortsubstr(strtran(*collect(issue_no,grp->comic_title),crlf(),", "),", ","A","N")
            There can be only one.

              Thats what I thought to use, but I had the syntax wrong at the end. I just tried it and it doesn't seem to want to work. I even tried changing the "N" to a "C" with no change in the output. I'm going to see if there is still something I'm missing. As far as I can see, it should work properly.

                Re: Help with list on report

                Make sure the delimiter in the strtran() matches the delimiter in the sortsubstr(). IOW if you use comma and a space, use that both places.

                  Nope, still same results. Here is what i got, if you goto avengers on the report, you will see that #6 is out of order from the list in the group footer. Most of the records are in numerical order but some are not and thats why I would like to sort them properly. Like I said, I may have to change the field to numeric.

                    It isn't out of sequence if you change the final parameter to "N", at least not as I see it.

                      GRRRRRR... I just re-entered the expresion for the umteenth time, and now it decided to work properly. I knew it should have worked. My comp. must be messing with me. LOL. It does this sometimes, I can copy the exact code from someone like you gave me, and I would get different results, then I walk away and come back without changing anything, and it will work correctly. Can be frustrating at times :)

                      Thanks for the help again, your code was correct the first time, just my pc messing with me today :)

                        Ok, now I am really getting messed up....now this is working somewhat, and maybe my understanding of sorting character fields is off, but is this not correct?

                        The others are coming up like they are supposed to. Maybe my pc is messing with me again.

                          I did see that but didn't investigate. As you said, the others do work.

                          Will take a look at the decimal situation.

                            I would think that the decimals are not being handled properly. You should be able to use this instead of sortsubstr().

                            From the days before there was a *collect() we used

                            Code:
                            issuenum = strtran(table.external_record_content_get("comics","alltrim(issue_no)","val(issue_no)","Comic_Tite = "+quote(comic_tite)),crlf(),", ")
                            There can be only one.
