Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Which desktop version is the most stable.

Does anyone know which version is the most stable? I just upgraded to Version-11, and when navigating and changing data on tables the muse goes wherever it feel like. I update a field, click on the next, and instead two or three down the line get the focus. I am not pleased at all. Verion-9 was a pleasure to work with.

I am not interested at all in Version-12. I actually like the old interface much better.

      Robert,

There was a bug in the last production version of V11 which resulted in erratic row selection if a browse didn't all fit in the vertical space available. This was fixed in the pre-release version and in V12.

        Jon,

I am currently using Build 3381 – 4096, which is supposed to be the latest.

          Robert -
Check the "Strange Control Browse Issue" thread that addressed the mouse problem. It was resolved in a subsequent pre-release version.

Unfortunately, there no longer seems to be a link to the pre-release version(s) for V11 - maybe the fixes in them were affecting sales of V12.

Re: Which desktop version is the most stable.

              Jon,

I just found the patch link:
              http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...easenotes.html

I have been using Alpha since the 1980’s. I believe that I started with Version-2.

Over the years there have been bug, most have gotten fixed, some I wonder, but overall I was pleased with their effort.

To leave a Version with such bugs and just move on to the next, I find that to be very careless, especially toward those clients that design applications for others. If a bug could not be fixed, that would be one thing, however, the fix exists, and not to make the client aware of it, pain and simple, it shows me that all they care is about you buying the next version. Those of us who are in business, we all want to make new sales, but there is a fine line, and I personally believe that Alpha has crossed that line buy not offering that fix willingly.

I no longer have the confidence in Alpha that I have had in the past.

I just installed the (3788-4187 Build Patch), and the browse works perfect.

Alpha should make the patch available to all under the (Check for new version) menu command. This is a very annoying problem to have, especially when the fix is available.

Is the patch still subject to the "use it at your peril clause"?

                    Ted,

It probably is, but I could not use the browses with the previous build. I can always re-install the older build. From what I understand, quite a few people are using it. It is a choice that one must make, old with browse problem or try new one.

                      You are correct Robert.
I tried, along with others, to get the last patch formally released but all we got was a comment that they "thought" it was ok, and no one had found anything untoward.
That said, there are no more fixes planned for V11 so one must live with the problems.

I agree - there have been 27 unofficial updates to v11 since the last official release. That sounds like enough fixes to make it official. The last full patch does indeed fix the browse, I'm happy!

Well this is my problem now.
Dev = Version 3788 Build 4187 - that is the latest.
The RT Plus update will install but not launch, so I had to reinstall Version 3381 Build 4096, which was the last "official" patch.

This is an issue as building a RT with different versions is not the best idea.
                          Any ideas?

I suggest we petition Alpha to update the official release with the browse fix since that seems to be the only thing in those other updates that is needed by the desktop. How can they with good conscience, still sell a version with that problem?

Re: Which desktop version is the most stable.

This is the last version of Alpha I will ever buy. I have lost all faith in the company. I believe that in the long run they will regret not supporting the desktop. I would have continued to update forever, but not under these conditions.

I am still very disappointed in the help documentation of this version.

In the past I have never said a bad thing about Alpha, even when there were bugs, because I strongly believed that they always tried their best, and that is all one can ask. I no longer feel that way. I find that I have to search allover the place to find a help article on new features. Maybe it is just the way I feel, and everybody else is satisfied.

You just don’t leave customers hanging, and wash your hands clean. An update with bug fixes should definitely be released. How can one sell a database software with a bug on table scrolling, that is what the software is all about, scrolling through data. That is my opinion and I don’t expect everyone to agree with me.
