Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

I noticed that periodically an object name is changed from the field name to "FIELD1", "FIELD2" etc. What causes this?

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

Every object in your layout must have a unique name. If you drop multiple copies of a table field into your layout Alpha will automatically "number" them so they can be distinguished from each other.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

Additionally, if you copy a form object and paste it to the same form it will acquire the same name as the original with the digit suffix.
      There can be only one.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

This form was a simple "Custom" form built by dragging fields from the table. There are no duplicate names.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

Sorry, Still confused. There are no duplicate names in the table. I may have used the object name in another table or form.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

No one mentioned duplicate names in the table.

If you design a new form and drop a table field on the form it will have the same object name as the field. If you drop it again, it will have the field name with a 0 at the end. If you drop it again it will have the field name with a 1 at the end.

If you remove any of those the remaining objects do not renumber although you can do that manually as well as change the object name to something else.
            There can be only one.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

Stan's right. We're talking about the names of objects in your form, not the names of fields in your table.

Ron, each object is created when you drag and drop a table field into your form. The object is not the table field. It's the control through which the field value in your table is displayed. If you place your form in design mode and right click an object you can easily examine its properties. You will see that the object has an "object name" and you will see the "Field" being displayed by the object. This can be a bit confusing for newcomers since Alpha supplies the object name automatically, and when the first instance of a table field is dropped into a form the supplied object name is the same as the table fieldname.

Holler if my long-winded explanation has contributed to your confusion.

Re: Object Name Changed to "FIELD1"

If I understand your question/issue you have dragged a field onto a form and the created object was named "O_M_SER". Then over the course of time "something happened" and name changed to "Field1". Your goal with this post is to determine what exactly the "something happened" action is and prevent it from occurring?
