Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How To Copy A5V11 Help->Open Documentation files

I have entered many Custom Topics to the Alpha5 Help system.

I want to copy these notes from my desktop computer(Win7) to my laptop.

From searching around on this forum I understand that the files are kept in C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 11...

    So...

I copied what looked like the appropriate files from my desktop(Win7) to the laptop (Win8)...

    BUT...

The help system remains unchanged... I can't see my custom topics... How can I copy these notes?

If you add the help dbf to the database, (right click add tables), you should be able to zip the whole caboodle.
    Also makes editing easier.

I'm not sure that that does it... I'm not referring to the individual database help files... I am referring to the general A5 Help / Documentation
I want the Top Menu-> Help-> Open Documentation to load the A5 documentation/Help with all of the Custom Topics that I entered in the first computer.

        Reread your post.
If you have changed the Alpha Documentation, then you should be able to overwrite the existing help with the one you want.
Personally I'd rename the originals before attempting this.

Well... I thought that I did this..
On my desktop WinV7 computer the alpha help / doc files are in the C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 11 directory
On my laptop this directory is empty... I tried copying the hep files from this directory on my desktop to the laptop... didn't work
I think that the problem may be that Alpha installs the Doc/Help files in a different location in Win8... but... maybe not?!
I have created a large number of Custom Topics in the Alpha Help/Doc system...

Is this a Run Time install David?

Why not do a drive search for

              doc_notes.dbf

If you don't find one on the laptop, create one, find it, replace it.
              There can be only one.

Then add the doc_notes.dbf file to the database...

I will try that... but I'm confused... the a5 doc system is not associated with any one database... it is associated with the a5 development environment.

Re: How To Copy A5V11 Help->Open Documentation files

did you go through the process of setting up a doc notes file in the new installation? (from the documentation window-preferences) If not then try doing that first. Then take note of the location of the file. If you name the new doc file the same as you have now then you should be able to replace the new with your existing.
