Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field label in field

I think I saw this someplace, but don't remember where.

When you put a form in design mode, you see the field label in the field itself. How can I make this happen when you leave design mode?

This would save space on my form, if I could show the label in the field.

    thanks,

    ~ Tom

    Re: Field label in field

You see the field label in the field, normally for a calculated field, if Alpha can't resolve the calculation. I suppose one could create a conditional object for each field testing the value in the table field and display the label if the field is empty.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Field label in field

What if you set the default values in field rules to the field label text so upon entering a new record that would display? You could format the text to display with something like "<fieldname>" - at least for the character fields...for other types, the bubble help could provide the same info.

Robin - your suggestion will work. Its only when entering a new record that someone needs to see the field label.

Maybe I saw this in an AA video on Panels. I'm trying to upgrade my skills, but its a challenge. Meanwhile, I thought V11 Desktop may have the same feature and I just couldn't find it.

        Thanks ~ Tom

          Re: Field label in field

Tom, you wouldn't even have to limit yourself to the actual fieldname, but could use any descriptive text as long as it doesn't look like actual data to the end user - which is why I added the brackets. Then your CanSave script can look for "<" and know the field was skipped and warn the user.

What about a conditional object over the field?
            Have you explored Methods?
You can place things like Icons inside fields as opposed to them appearing on the right hand side.

Thanks again Robin, this looks like my best approach.

                Hi Tom,
Its not that hard - add this line to your Autoexec:

                a5.System_Mode_set("field_popup_button_position","inside")

It will put all those smart field images inside the field.

                  Oh no it won't!
Some really don't want to Robin.
Most will, but the picture select won't as I recall.
