Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Post Operation Add To It - Just can't get it to work

    I've found several posts, going way back, but none have helped. The Wiki I've read until my wife says I'm going crazy. I built the simplest 2 tbles with the simplest 2 fields in both tables and cannot get numbers from the transition tble to the master tble. Both are attached in a zip.

    This has to easy, just getting a little thick up stairs I guess. Thank you for your help.

    You've defined a post operation correctly. A post operation takes values in defined fields from the transaction table and replaces, adds to, or subtracts from values in defined fields in the master table. The matching records to be modified are located via the linking field(s) defined.

    There are no records in the master table to be posted to.

    What you are probably wanting to do is append records from the transaction table to the master table.
    There can be only one.

      You need a third field to build the link with.

      IE, something like customer number, part number, but not a field that you want to add the value from the transaction to the master.

      And as Stan says the record in the master must already be there. Then then transaction value can be added to the master.

      To ass a record, use append which has choices to add unique records or update existing records.

        Re: Post Operation Add To It - Just can't get it to work

        Hi Stan and Al Thanks for your help. Maybe I can regain my sanity.

        I added the number 2 to both fields in the Master table. Added a numeric field called ' link' in both fields (because suggested). I have 2 independent tables, not a set.

        Rebuilt the operation 'Post Add to it', still does not work. I've attached an updated zip.

        I want to have 2 fields, that can be empty, that are simply added to from a master table (even if the master fields are empty). This will be a script on a button. Each time the user pushes the button it will simply accrue the numbers in the master table by adding the changed numbers in the transaction table. The 2 tables are not part of a set.

        I have built several append operations run from buttons and they work well. I've tried the append, copy and update and the 'post/add to it' should be what I want.

        This should be really easy. I'm still trying every variation I can think of. Thank you again.

          PostUpdate.zip

          You didn't change the linking field for the post operation to be

          link

          for both tables.

          Do that and it works.

            Stan - You are absolutely correct...it does work!!!!! Thank you, thank you....

            Question: Did you simply plug the 'link' field in?

            '-------Stan's
            a_tbl = table.current()
            post.t_db = "c:\xtemp\postupdate\transaction.DBF"
            post.m_key = "Link"
            post.t_key = "link"
            post.m_filter = ""
            post.t_filter = ""
            post.m_count = 1
            post.m_field1 = "Master_1"
            post.m_exp1 = "Master_1+@Transaction->To_Master_1"
            post.t_count = 0
            a_tbl.post()

            '-------My dev does not plug the field 'link' in

            a_tbl = table.current()
            post.t_db = "c:\xtemp\postupdate\transaction.DBF"
            post.m_key = "str(MASTER_1,4,0)-str(MASTER_2,4,0)"
            post.t_key = "str(TO_MASTER_1,4,0)-str(TO_MASTER_2,4,0)"
            post.m_filter = ""
            post.t_filter = ""
            post.m_count = 1
            post.m_field1 = "Master_1"
            post.m_exp1 = "Master_1+@Transaction->To_Master_1"
            post.t_count = 0
            a_tbl.post()

            '----------------this is what my dev puts in for linking fields?

            Master linking key - str(MASTER_1,4,0)-str(MASTER_2,4,0)
            Tranaction linking key - str(TO_MASTER_1,4,0)-str(TO_MASTER_2,4,0)

            Why the difference?

              Re: Post Operation Add To It - Just can't get it to work

              Also, once back working on my app, I could not use a linking field used in the set. I had to use another (created 'link' no surprise) and it works. Also did confirm that the master table fields cannot be empty (thank you Al). Need to start with '1' in the field then decrement by 1 when I use it. Constant learning process.

              Again, thank you.

                I believe you defined your post operation before the "link" field was added. Alpha doesn't auto-modify the operation when you change the fields available. Also, when defining an operation such as this, Alpha makes a best guess about how the tables should be linked. If there is one common field name in both tables it will suggest that. Two common, likely suggest the combination.
