Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trying to display a field variavbe in a message timed

    I have this so far in a button that advances the record.

    a5_context_pagedn()

    DIM form_name as C
    'form_name = topparent.name()+".this"
    DIM SHARED var as C
    DIM SHARED varC_result as C
    expression_result = eval("title",form_name)
    var = convert_type(expression_result,"C")
    ui_dlg_box("",<<%dlg%
    {size=5}{timer=close}{interval=2}{position=expandleft}{nocaption}
    [.40var];
    %dlg%)

    Yes it works, but very sloppy. Plus it reads the record title that is past not the new reord.
    All I want is to display the value in the field 'title' in the record, as the new form opens, for 2 seconds. then disappear it.
    Is there a better way to do it?

    Then really, it doesn't work?

    Why not provide a sample database with

    a button that advances the record
    so we can see what is happening in context?

      expression_result = eval("title",form_name)
      If this line executes before the form opens to a new record then the title object on that form has no value, it still has the value of the previous record.

        I thought that after I declare the : a5_context_pagedn()
        I am in the next record. It seems not.
        probably needs further commands to ensure that I am in the next record.
        Tried to resync and refresh after above line and still the same.

          See attached sample.
          Problem:
          From main menu it works. Next rec button, keeps the prior record.

          Need:
          is there a way to display the title field timed in a different way other than with a message way?

            Re: Trying to display a field variavle in a message timed

            topparent.New_Record()

            will create a new record.

            The new record has no field values so the xdialog displays a blank for title.

            I think you're looking for topparent.fetch_next()

            Forget the pagedn and the resynching.

              topparent.fetch_next() instead of a5_context_pagedn() works very well. It does solve the problem.
              Thanks, thanks a lot.
              Now, is there a cleaner and simpler way to display the title, other than the way I am using now?

                Don't know why you consider the whole message deal necessary to display for 2 seconds and why you think xdialog is not clean and simple.

                You could use WAITDIALOG with a sleep(2).

                    See if this works for you. The form has the title field on the form. When the form opens the title field is visible. There is code on the OnArrive event for the first tab stop field on the form that calls a modeless dialog having timer code for 2 seconds before it hides the title field. There are some timing issues that don't allow the form init to be used.

                      I tried to open the zip but there is aproblem with the table. As it opens , it fails to save document error. Forms are not displayed and there is error in he table.
                      Please resend.

                        Re: Trying to display a field variavle in a message timed

                        I am very interested in Mike Wilson approach, but here is my latest attempt. I was able to modify the dialog box, so it looks a bit better.
                        The field is no longer blue and I am able to change font and colors.
                        It was not easy, as the parameters for the dialog{} are spread over different sources.
                        The reason for this form, it is used to be displayed with multiple monitors to other people present at the data entry.
                        I was trying to avoid the interaction to hover or click after the next record appeared.

                          it fails to save document error
                          Generally an indication you tried to open a database in a directory where you do not have write permissions. Also possible the files are set as readonly.

                            Correct. All fixed.
                            I see the form with the title. I will see if I can add timing before it hides it.
