Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Drop down with no editing

    Hi,

Is it possible to create a drop down of table data without the ability to edit or delete.

For example on websites you can pick from a list of drop down options and all you can do is select one.

However on a Alpha Five form it appears you can edit the text on the drop down and even delete the text. I don't want users to be able to do that.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sam

What style of dropdown are you selecting? There are a number of options and settings within those. Try different selections. Something like "Edit Combo" will probably do as the description says.

      Hi Sam,

Is the dropdown to be a Simple Fixed list, or will there be a need for a Supervisor to edit records in a table?

        Yes Sam,
But it takes a little extra.
        1. First begin by defining the field in the field rules with a table lookup.
        2. Attach code that evaluates the field value against the table values to assure there is not a difference ( an exact match must happen). This is needed because the field allows additions and subtractions to the chosen lookup value.

In the attached example there is a table "Orders" that has a field set with field rule to lookup to the customer table. On the orders form, there is form field OnChange event which calls a user-defined function to evaluate whether the value in the field is an exact match with what is in the table, so no additions and subtractions can be made.

        Hope this helps.

Ok thank you guys... not as simple as I would have hoped. Thanks for your script Mike, I will take a look when I'm back in the office.

Once again, many thanks for ALL your help! :-) Sam

            Sam

Have you look at the field rules for tables where you can have a lookup from another table for a field?

By default it doesn't allow editing.

When you place the field on a form or browse the drop down option is included.

              Mike

Can't you use the allow exceptions option of Force closest match or Popup on mismatch to force values to be in the lookup table and not allow values not in the lookup table?

You already have the edit and add records options off.

Fixing to ask if this is any different from just a basic lookup when I saw Al's posts. Is it?
