Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Any examples or explanation of Specify Browse by Expression?

I am trying to find some sort of explanation as to how the 'Specify Browse by Expression' works. The only thing I could find in the Help files and Alphapedia is a short line saying that this is an expression that is supposed to select fields that are displayed in a browse; but no explanation as to how you do it. (here is the entry: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...wse+Properties ) - some way down the page.

What I want to do is, have a browse that shows one column and hides two others, depending on what record I am in. I want to put it in a form based on a set; the parent table has only a few records, the browse is based on a child table linked one to many. There are three columns in the child table that are only relevant to some of the parent table records, so I want only the relevant column to show. So, if I navigate from one record to the next, the browse should be modified accordingly. I hope that makes sense.

Alternatively, I could just have the form display one of three different named browses on the table depending on the record. Of course, I could place all three browses on top of each other on the form and dynamically hide or show the appropriate browse, but I am hoping there is a better way of doing this.

If you can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

Never mind, I found it here: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...+by+Expression
It seems to work with named browses, not just embedded ones as it says on the alphapedia.

Create three embedded browses and place each on a page of a conditional object. Have the OnFetch event for the form refresh the condition based on the test you set.

If needed, pull a field out of the browse and semi-hide it on the form by setting the font color the same as the background and make it disabled. I don't know what you are looking for to determine which browse you want to display.

Look at the email_features_demo database supplied with v12. The Customer form lookup browse has a really slick example of dynamically changing the field contents in a single browse on a form.

          Robin,

You are better off using browse by expression rather than a conditional object. That way only one browse is on the form at a time.

Actually Peter I doubt I would ever do it that way myself. But I suppose creating three different browses to display the data from the same table might make sense. First I would consider whether irrelevant data needs to even be in the same table...or whether a link to another table might work better. I suppose an example of the data would help.

I am currently doing this now. The app is for the insurance industry which contains data elements for Insurance Companies, Examination Companies, Insurance Agents, Examiners, clients... etc. I have a form with one button that the user selects from a list of queries they wish run on the set data, with each query having focus on filtering for specific element combinations. Based upon the query they select, the code 1) presents a dialog for the user to enter/select the data values (dates and such) for 2-3 fields for the query, 2) reveals the embedded browse to display, 3) sizes the embedded browse 3) filters the table to show the return for the specifics the user entered for the query There are 7 embedded browses on my form that each have a different configuration of data and buttons in the browse to execute various secondary events fr the filtered data. I was dubious about it working, but it works great! One form, 7 embedded browses, about 11 query scripts.
