Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Column Titleclick Event

    I should probably put this in the v9 forum since this feature is that old - and still no decent help available...either in the Wiki or here.

    I have a couple of uses for this feature - One is to click on the column title of a logical checkbox field and either select or unselect all the records currently displayed in the browse (filtered); the other is to prompt the user for text to change the field values in the column. About all I have been able to accomplish is to have the event push a button that runs a script that does an update on the table.

    Has anyone got something better that actually shows how I might use this feature?

    If you want to filter by .T. or .F. , just select the check box on the form, right click, select "Filter For" and then select "True" or "False" and then "OK".

    At least that is what I think you are asking.

      No, I want to change the records in a filtered browse for the column field the titleclick event is defined for.

      Code:
      FUNCTION Cx_Embrws AS C (ColObjName AS C, FldVal AS C = "" )
      'DESCRIPTION: Use in Titleclick Event for Embedded browse to change column value
      	if FldVal = "" then
      		FldVal = ui_get_text("Change Column Records","New Value: ")
      		if FldVal = "" then
      			RESPONSE = msgbox("Confirm Blank Value","Do you want to set the field to blank?",35)
      			if response = 7 then
      				'user cancelled
      				goto ENDIT
      			end if
      		end if
      	end if
      	dim brws_name as c
      	dim tbl as p
      	dim frmname as c
      	dim tblname as c
      	dim vn as n = 0
      	dim commit_flag as L = .f.

      	brws_name = this.active()	'Browse1
      	frmname = topparent.Name()
      	tbl = eval(brws_name+".table_get()")
      	tblname = tbl.name_get()	'returns child table name for browse1
      	vn = tbl.records_get() 'should get count in current query

      	commit_flag = .t.
      	tbl.fetch_first()
      	while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
      		on error goto ERRMSG
      		tbl.change_begin()
      		on error goto 0
      			evaluate_template(tbl+".ColObjName = "+quote(FldVal))
      		tbl.change_end(commit_flag)
      		tbl.fetch_next()
      	end while

      	eval(brws_name+".refresh()")
      	eval(brws_name+".fetch_first()")
      	msg = eval(frmname+":"+brws_name+":"+ColObjName+".value = "+FldVal)
      	Tln("Updated",msg)
      	Cx_Embrws = "Updated: "+msg

      	end
      	ERRMSG:
      	commit_flag = .f.
      	script_play("ERRMSG")
      	on error goto 0
      	RESUME NEXT

      	end
      	ENDIT:
      	Cx_Embrws = "Cancelled"
      END FUNCTION
      'Ex1: Cx_Embrws("MACHNO") script will prompt user for new FLDVAL
      'Ex2:  newfldval = ui_get_text(...)

        Re: Browse Column Titleclick Event

        I pulled the script out of the function and placed it in the titleclick event. My first problem is that 'this.active()' returns the active column object name and not the browse object name.

        Now how do I get that...?

        Edit:
        In the IW
        col_act = this.active(.t.)
        =":Select_Tags:Browse1"
        brws_name = word(col_act,3,":",1) 'Browse1

        In the trace window I am getting the proper values including the table name for the browse - however the tbl.change_begin() section is doing nothing. There must be another approach I am missing here...

          Evaluate_template() doesn't complain if the command supplied is incorrect.

          evaluate_template(tbl+".ColObjName = "+quote(FldVal))

          looks like to me it should be

          evaluate_template("tbl."+ColObjName+" = "+quote(FldVal))

          or

          eval("tbl."+ColObjName) = fldval
          There can be only one.

            Thanks Stan, I'll try that. I had it backwards from the msg string... ;)

              The way I try to remember it.........

              Expression as C - means you should be able to ? it in the interactive.

              Code:
              ColObjName = "cost" 'for example
              FldVal = "18.99" 'likewise

              ? tbl+".ColObjName = "+quote(FldVal)
              ERROR: Variable "tbl" not found.
              ? "tbl"+".ColObjName = "+quote(FldVal)
              = tbl.ColObjName = "18.99"

              ? "tbl."+ColObjName+" = "+quote(FldVal)
              = tbl.cost = "18.99"
              There can be only one.

                Re: Browse Column Titleclick Event

                I thought I had but apparently not! Anyway getting the active object using 'this.active()' did not work as expected but 'topparent.active()' did. So those two changes plus adding a tbl.batch_begin() and tbl.batch_end() to the table change section made it work just as I hoped. Now I have a generic script I can add to the titleclick event when a queried group of records needs to be changed.

                In this case it was to reassign machine numbers or add a cutline to a group of production tickets. In this example on a set based form, it worked when the browse was the primary table - still need to see if it will work on a child table...

                Thanks again.
