Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Drop Down List Problem

I have searched for answers on this but can't seem to find any. I have a Shipper ID drop down listing my Dispatch Database tied to a lookup field in my Customer database. When entering the field the drop down list pops up but I can only scroll to the customer and I want to be able to start typing their number to get to the correct record rater than scrolling. Is there any way to accomplish this?

I think that's known as a progressive or dynamic lookup. discussed before, you might want to search. Also take at the AlphaSports sample database, customer information form, Find by Lastname.
    There can be only one.

Not being sure what context and tools you are using, so all I can suggest is look for a combo dropdown
On a form it would be "Record List-edit combo box"

I have the lookup defined in the table field rules so I just kind of expected that with just s little tweaking I could get the auto suggest to work. I am unsure if I need to define something at the form level or not. I have a customer table, a driver table and a dispatch table. The dispatch table is the main information table that lookup records from both the driver and customer tables in order to fill out the information needed for our customers freight move. So the lookup tables we defined at the table field rule level. Should I have done this differently? I am coming from programming in MS Access so things are a bit different for me.

        Thanks,
        RJ

Auto suggest as you put it works on the field you define as the look-up which would be the field defined on the first "Source" line. That line also has to be set as visible.

In your case to zero in on a customer by customer number you would need the customer number on the first source line and set as visible.

Another way is to not set the look up as a drop down. This will then allow searching, filtering and zeroing in on any visible field defined in the table look up by just clicking in the filed on the form, then when the pop-up displays, click the column name of the field you want to search and start typing. That will start a a query by.

May qualify as the most confusing sentence I have ever read.

Well the Customer ID is set to visible. So I will try the other suggestion. Hopefully I can get my punch list out of the way soon. The database is working very well. Programmed all the things that I always wish I had but couldn't get Access to do or do properly. These last few tweaks will set it apart. Thanks. - RJ

Well that worked! Not quite what I was aiming for but it works better as it is more versatile. Thank you for your help. - RJ

                  Ray,

I guess I've been hanging around Dave too long, cause it makes perfect sense to me (mostly)! <grin>

It helped to stay focused on the fact they were talking about a lookup field rule. Perhaps Ray was still on his record list-edit combo box...? ;)

Since y'all get it I must be too literal. I also know little about table lookup fieldrules.
                      Apologies Clifton.
