Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Robin,
either version will run on xp3, win7 and win8.1.

By the way, windows 8 was used to update one of xp3 computers so I have the newest version of windows for testing. MS gives you the option to test both your hardware and software so you know what will/won't work after the upgrade.

I have eliminated all except win7 and win 8.1 computers at this point. It was actually less money to go win8.1 than win7 when I did the last one. You will also be able to take advantage of the free(for the 1st year) win10 when it comes out in a few months.

Dave, my next question would be will A11/12 run on XPs/W7. The Alpha shop options are very confusing and short on such details. When I started with A4 (which I still use on an XP lap top) one just bought it and ran it...Thanks (Mr) Robin.

    Robin,

As said before(I think), download the 30 day trial of a5v12. Make a copy of the application in a separate folder. Run it with v12 trial and see how it does. If you try it all and it works, you are home free.

If it runs with v12, it will run with v11, I think. Then you know it is just a matter of choosing v11 or v12.

I am strong on v12 because of bug fixes that were done after v11 and possible other ones coming and the relatively small price for the jump.

Actually Dave you agree with Ron not me. If the desktop has no future with Alpha, why not save your money and run with v11? OTOH, if you want SQL compatibilty and future web or mobile capabilities, by all means go with v12. But whether v11 or 12, Robin still needs to copy her app and dump her data as the first step. And especially if she wants some help from here.

I agree with Robin about v12 instead of v11.

    Robin,

My first thought would be running the application under the different windows compatibility modes. This may or may not work. If you need to move to version 11 or 12 and run into trouble, there is one other avenue still available. Look at Oracle VM VirtualBox. You create a virtual machine running whatever operating system you want with file sharing and networking. I have some older software applications which will only run on Windows XP 32-bit. So I use VirtualBox.

That's true! If your original developer used action scripts, those will all need to be re-done. I never used the script genie, so I never had the issue of updating.

    But....

I did create custom toolbars, and if your developer also did, those need to be re-made.

Listen, it may not be easy, but it will be easier than the update from version 1.1 to version 4.5 was years ago. That was almost a complete re-write. Back then, the whole program was re-written and XBasic was, too!

One last opinion, if you don't mind. And this opinion may be more mine than others.

By moving to 11, and not 12, you are starting with a foot in the grave, so-to-speak. Not that 12 offers much, if anything, more, there were unresolved bugs in 11, and 12 stands a better chance of running on Windows 10 and above. Others will have different thoughts on that, but if you have 6 users, and the app is doing what a good app is supposed to do by saving you time, money, stress, and frustration, the additional investment into the future may be in play.

Regardless, good luck and try to have some fun in the update. It may be a good time to smooth out any rough spots that irritate you where the direction of your business has veered from the path the original app was built to serve.

    Hi Robin,
Great name btw! I would think your first step would be to copy the app to a new directory and empty the tables of live data. Add one or two dummy records and be sure everything works correctly, and then you can let us look at your set up. Personally I think coverting the old action scripts is the biggest PIA, but it will be hard to give much advice until we know what you have.

Also, card stacks were eliminated in favor of just using forms...

Besides that array issue with [brackets], and the lack of card stacks, your changeover will be easy. There may be, if I remember, a few small issues, but they are quick fixes.

Be aware that there are THOUSANDS of enhancements that can and will make the application faster and better. Just a quick one of the top of my head is that forms look so much better, as do buttons, with gradients.

Oh, one other thing - there was something different in how Alpha sees marked and deleted records. It's been a while, but something sticks in my head about that.
