Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem Printing ONE report in an application--just stopped printing!

I am running a medical billing program. I am able to print all my reports, except one--its a HCFA 1500 form. It was printing fine and then it just stopped. I tried duplicating it and the duplicate won't print either. I tried printing it from my menu and from "Print Genie" and it still does not work. I made a new report from scratch, that worked fine for about 6 weeks, then it stopped printing. It's driving me nuts that just this one report won't work. I can't keep remaking this form--there are a lot of fields--only one is a calculation-but they must be placed exactly so because they print on a specific preprinted form and the printing must line up exactly.

Alpha looks like it is sending the report to the printer, but nothing is sent! I have re installed the printer, restarted the program, computer and printer.

    Any suggestions are welcomed!

Have you opened the printer properties window in Windows and seen if the report spools to the printer? Tried printing to a different printer, tried saving as pdf and printing that?
    There can be only one.

      Debra,

You have mentioned both report and form in your query above.
Are you printing a report to fill a form, or ar you printing a form to fill a form?

Sorry. I am printing a report It prints on a standard HCFA 1500 paper form-that has a specific layout. My report drops the fields in the correct places on this form

I do not see the report in the printer properties in windows.
When I save it as a PDF all I get is a blank page.

When it worked, it only printed to the local printer on my machine. It would not print to the network printer (other reports in the application print in both places)

The HCFA 1500 is medical billing paper form that has pre-printed boxes where the required data is to be printed. I can attest that it is a pain to setup and something that I would not wish to repeat. I have a table with the report built on top of it that I use. When I need to print the report I populate the table with the needed data, print the report, then empty the table.

Page 5 has a sample of the form in question.

            Debra -

Are you able to print preview the report? Are you getting any error messages or any events related to the printing showing up in the windows event log? Troubleshooting print issues can be a real chore. I would start with printing a test print page from windows to the printer.

            Print a test page instrutions
            http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...#1TC=windows-7

Then I would do a test of a simple report in Alpha5 to the printer.

If both of those are successfull then it is most likely an issue with the report it's self and something may need to be checked or unchecked in the report properties during report design.

What version of Windows are you running?
What printer are you attempting to print to?
Is the printer a network printer or USB?
Have you updated your printer drivers?

I am using Windows 7 Prof It is a HP laserjet P 2015 printer. Test page prints fine. It is set up as a local printer--it is connected directly to my computer. It prints EVERYTHING else fine--including this report until two months ago. I redid the report, and it worked fine until last week. There is obviously something that keeps getting corrupt in this report--and I can't find it! We started sing this report over a year ago. It worked fine for about a year.

Is it possible there was some kind of update that would affect one report and nothing else?

The report pulls the data from a set. The rest of the reports that I run using that set are fine. I can preview the report and it is fine. When I send it to the printer, it acts like it is going-lets me select the printer, etc but nothing comes out of the printer and in windows it does not show the document at all.

Since you're dealing with sensitive information it is unlikely you can provide a live sample database. For us to offer much more we're going to have to have something to tinker with.

                  You could, as time permits

Right click on each of the tables in the set and choose, Utilities, Duplicate
In the dialog check all the boxes except Records
After duplicating the tables making empty copies, create a new set of these tables in the same fashion as your original set.
Create a sample record not containing sensitive information which will allow us to try the report.
Right click on the new set and choose Zip.

That will create a compressed file of the whole, tables, layouts, etc. Attach that file here with instructions as to which report to try to print.
                  There can be only one.

Typically no, not un-heard of. I would investigate other more likely issues first.

There is obviously something that keeps getting corrupt in this report
Are people making changes to the report design? Can you restore the set definition files from a backup taken when the report was working? Does anyone else print this report?

                    Open the Printer Queue window
                    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...he-print-queue

Side note: After following the Microsoft instructions I had to click one more link called "See what's printing". You should get something similar to the screen shot I have attached. With the queue window open do re-run and print the HCFA. You should see the report hit the queue, do some processing, then disappear.

Just a thought: Have you compacted the database?
If you do work on reports, forms and other, it can build up in the set's supporting files.
I have seen issues with this.
Compacting will clean all the leftovers out.

I just looked at the form to fill. Thought ya'll said it was complicated? What to put in is delicate, but the form is not. Sorry, din not mean it was super easy either.

Probably best to do like Andrew and have a printing table just for the printing where all the data goes for that one record to print.
                        .

We have occasionally experienced issues like this when a temporary index has stopped the appropriate selection taking place at print time. Take a look at the record selection properties as shown below and make sure that NONE is selected in the lower half of the dialogue and that the selection of record(s) is included in the script or action script you create to run it. Also look for any files beginning with a $ sign in your application and Alpha Programs folders.

My thanks to Everyone who helped on this!!

I went home and tried the report on the home computer and printer and found it still did not work and did not send it to the print file. I went through every line of the report and found that somehow (??) in the design section, under report, properties, band there was a listing for printer. Somehow a file name was inserted there!! Once that was cleared out, it started to print.

I greatly appreciate everyone who offered a suggestion!!! Alpha users are the best!

                              Just curious.

Was the filename complete with drive-path-filename-extension? Was this a valid location/did the location exist? Did you examine the location to see if a file was being created?
