Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Link child to parent in set based on value in one of two fields

    Hi,

I did some searching, but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I have two tables which I would like to link in a one-to-one relationship on the field "CODE". The parent has just one field called CODE, however the child has two fields - CODE and LACODE. In instances where the child has an entry in the LACODE field (i.e. isnotblank), I want to link the LACODE field in the child to the CODE field in the parent. In instances where LACODE is blank, I want to link the CODE field in the child to the CODE field in the parent.

I'm guessing I need to use Link By Expression, but haven't been able to get the correct syntax for this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Code:
    IF(isnotblank("Lacode"),Lacode,code)
I personally would place this a a calculated field in the child table. Then link from [parent]->code to [child]->%new_calc_field%

You might also experiment with linking the child table twice to the parent, one instance linked on code, the other on lacode.
      There can be only one.

Make a third field on the child called link_code - can be a calculated field.

Put the value to link on in that field.

Appreciate the efforts for all involved.

It looks like the "link to a calculated field" idea seems to work fine. I did try linking to the same table twice, using two different fields as Stan suggested, but it didn't appear to work (or I did something wrong). If anyone's interested, here's why I needed this:

We're a CPA firm that maintains two client databases, 1 in our Tax software, and 1 in our Time and Billing software. The tax software generates an invoice, which then has to be entered into T&B for A/R purposes. After the dust settled from the end of this tax season, we needed to make sure that no one fell through the cracks - that all invoices generated were actually entered into T&B. I exported the billing info from the tax software into a table in Alpha, and the billing info from the T&B software was imported into another table. The problem was, that the key (in this instance, the client code), wasn't ALWAYS the same. Some of the T&B codes were different than the codes in the tax software, so in these instances when I compared the two, info was missing... I setup a custom field in the T&B software where we could enter the corresponding tax software code, and this would be included in the export... That way I could actually compare apples to apples. I know - "Why not changed the code in the T&B software to match?". We can't do that, because once a history is established, there is no way to change a code other than creating a new one (and losing the history).

Just curious - I haven't been in the forums in probably over a year... what happened to my old login? I noticed that the forum looks different than it has in the past... do they purge people that haven't had any activity in a while?

          Thanks again.

            Shawn,
What exactly did you use as criteria to match the two records when you did the "I compared the two" and discovered missing data. If it was maybe SSN or birth date or some other unique identifier(s), could your extra table field in each of the tables receiving the download be a calculated field that concatenates a few of these unique identifier fields together and use that as a linking field between the two tables. I got this to works concatenating mock SSN and DOB, and linking the tables in a set 1-M through the calculated linking fields.

              Hi,

I had to compare the two via the client code... We consider the codes in the tax software to be the "correct" codes. In many cases, the codes in the time and billing software are the same (making comparisons easy), but in some cases they differ, which is where the problem lied. While the tax software does have the DOB and SSN for obvious reasons, the T&B software does not - just basic stuff like name, address, entity type, etc. So the client code was the only way to go. By adding a custom field to the T&B software that a user could enter in a corresponding tax software code when necessary, I was able to match the two... It was just getting the logistics of linking them in a set... Creating a calculated field did the trick. Thanks for the reply
