Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Index Help

    Hi

I'm having a strange issue building new indexes on a table.

When using the index builder I can build an index on some fields but not on others.

Example: I can build an index on the Date_sold field but when I try to build it on the Date_ship field the index disappears from the index list in the builder.

I have other indexes base on the date_ship field with other filters on them and no issues.

So far I've identified 5 other fields in this table with the same problem.

    Please help

    Regards

That usually means that the filter can't be evaluated correctly.

    Some examples would be good.

It's hard to see what's going on without looking at the expression you are using.

Is it possible that you have corrupted data in some records?

      Hi Al,

Thank you for your quick reply

I've tried to build them with and without filters to no avail.

The expressions in the order expressions is just the field name, nothing complex.

Some fields are simple character fields and some are date fields, I've build other indexes on these fields and have no problems

How would you test for corrupted data in a field?

Not pertaining directly to the issue of your index disappearing but it sounds as if you may be building unnecessary indexes.

If you build a single index on date_ship including all records and later query the table with a filter expression involving that field, Alpha will use the index to speed up the query. It is seldom advisable to use a filtered index in place of a query.

There is a limit of 40 indexes per table.
        There can be only one.

I open a default browse and sort ascending and descending on each field. Bad data usually comes to the top or bottom of the list.

Otherwise you need to add a field to the table and run an update where new_field = old_field and see if the new field gets all of the data into it.

            Re: Index Help

            Hi Stan,

I'm using the filter on the index to filter records on a browse when the user initiates the browse. What started this was I tried to change the name if the index to make it easier for the user to find those records he needed. When I changed the name, it disappeared, from there I tried to build a new index using the old name and it disappeared as well. Which led me to investigate other fields in this table. Some worked and some didn't.

There are only 15 indexes on this table and some are using the same fields I'm trying to create new indexes for yet alpha just keeps deleting the new indexes.

For example, I have an index named Date, ordered on the Date_ship field and no filter. I also have an index named Today, ordered on the Date_ship field but has a filter set to filter records with current system date. Both indexes work fine but alpha won't let me build another index on the Date_ship field.

Maybe I'm missing something but I find this very strange.

Have you performed a database/workspace compact, restarted the machine, and tried again.

In accordance with Al's suggestion. duplicate the table, all except records. Can you create indexes on the new empty table? If so, append 100 records from the original, still able to create indexes? Append another 100, repeat.

                Hi Stan and Al,

                Thank you for your help

I found a corrupted records in the date_ship field and in all the other fields that didn't work.

It didn't show up when I sorted on the field but when I did a summary operation it was clear as day.

Thank you again for your help in resolving this problem

                Regards,
