Sometimes I forget to close a Browse/Form before re-running a script. If the form/browse is still open I cannot use tbl.zap() as it requires exclusive use.

table.in_use("work_file_prod_list") tells me if form/browse open, but how do I then close it?

my documentation says Close_if_exists(Name as C)
when I try close_if_exists(Layout_name) I get an error:

Variable type mis-match
attempt to pass data of type C to argument of type P

after some experimentation, I came up with:

layout_name = "Work_File_Reg_List"
tempP = obj(":"+object_Name_normalize(word(layout_name,1,"@")))
if is_object(tempP) then
    if tempP.class() = "form" .or. tempP.class() = "browse" then
       tempP.close()
    end if
end if

pinched the code from an action script which opened a form, so not sure if I need all the above?

The code worked for me in my sandbox...

now tried in my script which is a modeless dialog.

.... do things to create variable DATA used to populate table "WORK_FILE_PROD_LIST"

then ...

I need to close the browse from inside a modeless dialog, any suggestions?

Time to divide and conquer.

Simplify so it works and then add in features until it breaks.

Also, post a sample of what you have so we can take a detailed look at what is going on.

It's all in the design, as Al said.
If you really want to make something do what it wasn't designed to do you have an uphill struggle.
But.
Try closing the modeless dialog at the same time you trigger the table zap.
Taking the process outside of the form and put it as a Menu item on the top line will probably work also.

As some of you know, my database design knowledge is very small, even after twenty years of self-teaching myself Alpha5. I'm alright with functions and methods that I know.
Its the reason why I was a computer operator all my working life after failing the programming apptitude test as a lad (yes, they did have computers when I was young (Valve driven :))).

the above works for me, just have to remember to pack the table from time to time.

would seem that strange things work/ do not work inside a modeless dialog.

I am using a modeless dialog to create a toolbox to allow me to update my database from several different sources each with its own data format.

I think the programming method I use is called "Spuddling" (Google it !)
