Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What to do with zero time

    Hi All

I have a table with the following fields:
    clock_in field as C
    Start_Time as T
and a calculated field called TimeDiff as N,2
In order to cater for when there is no value in the Start_Time field I entered the following in the calculated field rule but it stops at the first record that has a Blank value in the Start_Time field.

    Code:
    IF(START_TIME <> {},START_TIME - CTODT(ALLTRIM(CLOCK_IN)),0)
I would really appreciate it is someone could shed some light on this.

    Many thanks
    Peter G

I also tried the following to check for empty Start_Time field with the same results:

    Code:
    IF(START_TIME <> "00/00/0000 12:00:00 00 am"	,START_TIME - CTODT(ALLTRIM(CLOCK_IN)),0)

Re: What to do with zero time

You didn't say how the values are entered in the clock_in field? Is it entered as short time? Date & time?
And, just as a curiosity, why would someone clock in but does not start? Or, is it that no one records when they start?
And as further curiosity, why the different field types?

Yes there is clock out and and end time but I did not think it was relevant here.
The time is in long time format. The data is imported from a clocking system and a satellite tracking system. The clocking data I can only get in text format (The reason for the conversion)
i am just concatenating the tables and want to calculate the lead time between when the driver clocks in and when he/she actually starts the truck before driving off.

        Thanks

Re: What to do with zero time

          Peter,

I've hit similar problems which I have resolved by using a base value and a greater than test, for example:

          if start_time > "01/01/2000 12:00:00 00 am"

From my experience Alpha doesn't always play well with null values.

            Hi Jon

Thanks....What if I convert the field into a character in the calculation and then test for that string "01/01/2000 12:00:00 00 am"?

I didn't ask about the "clock out".
I was, and still am, asking about the format of the clock in?
Can you provide a sample of the clock in field?

                Hi G Gabriel
The format that I get from the clocking system is as follows: character field "01/06/2015 05:51:00"

                Thanks

                    Hi Guys
                    Got sorted
This will ignore the Start time fields that are blank.
                    IF(CTIME(START_TIME) <> " " ,START_TIME - CTODT(ALLTRIM(CLOCK_IN)),0)

                    Many thanks

                      You could also use:
                      IF(isblank("START_TIME"),START_TIME - CTODT(ALLTRIM(CLOCK_IN)),0)
