Setting max user count (throttle runtime)

Anyone know where to find info on this.

I know I can hard set the user throttling from the control panel but there must be another way to check how many users are using the app and to set limits on how many other than manually setting the max user count from the control panel.

Look up the muf files and then utilize in aotoexec.

There is muf and rmuf , depends what you need.

I have looked at those Dave. Even with an app running both the muf and rmuf are empty and zero bytes.

Looks like it is a5_registration_license_inuse.

I also saw a a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse mentioned but cannot find anything on it and I get errors trying it in the interactive window so it may be something that is no longer used in A5

a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse() is counting users with a different license.
So when checked on the master (developer license) it counts the runtime users that have another license number(runtime license).
When checked on a runtime it counts the users running under a developers license (master).

From the control panel of the developer version select TOOLS then UTILITIES then THROTTLE RUNTIME USER COUNT - follow the on screen instructions to generate a "startup.control" file.
This file must sit in the runtime folder one each workstation of your client installations and ensure you have the code shown in your Autoexec file for the application. Works perfectly. One tip is to include a routine that can copy an updated "startup.control" file from a central location (preferably a sub folder of your server based app) to the PROGRAMS\RUNTIME folder on each client workstation. This becomes very useful when your client decides to increase the number of users you are licencing them for and saves you having to update each workstation.

The option of checking the muf and rmuf file can fall down when machines have not exited the A5 app correctly or crashed whereas the above method seems to work perfectly.

Ok, the a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse requires that you include your license number in the arguments for it to work. a5_registration_license_inuse does not.

a5_registration_license_inuse is in the documentation. a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse is not.

Both ?a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse and ?a5_registration_license_inuse typed in the IW without arguments result in a "ERROR: Variable "a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse" not found." type error.


While using the startup.control file method is probably more stable as Bob stated, the problem with using this method is I would have to create a pile of startup.control files to cover all possible licenses purchased scenarios and then figure out how to get my customer the correct one for the amount of seats they purchased.

Calculating the concurrent user count using a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse + a5_registration_license_inuse would allow me to control the max concurrent user count via a registration number hash.

I currently use AIMS Registration routines for controlling registration of my apps and it has concurrent user control built in. The problem is that the AIMS RR can be a pain in the ass for my customers to get me the computer id code for their machine that I would need to generate their registration number. I have reached out to Cal about the possibility of reading the required computer id into a variable that I could then use to better automate the registration request process.

Right now I am also working on creating a simpler process for controlling registration licensing for my apps that would allow me to create a registration number based on customer name, email address, amount of seats and possibly app feature levels without needing any additional info from the customer other then what they filled in when they purchase the app. For even more control I could also just put a simple "Request Registration Number" button in the app that would also send me the machine id so I could lock the registration down by computer as well.

this was taken from the code I left for you above. Every new rt or dev log in to the app increases the count by 1. It is being used every day.

I always give my users 1 extra to what they bought. Just something I do. One does not have to.
If they buy 5 users they get 6

They did not have throttle for runtime when I started this. I have too many apps out there to change them all now, so just kept this method.

Just like my backup sys and users system predates alpha adding them in.
