Round hours to 15 minutes

I know I've seen this someplace, but can't find it.

I'm working with time and want to convert hours to round to the nearest 15 minutes

8.05 hours -> 8.00 hours
8.20 hours -> 8.25 hours
8.40 Hours -> 8.50 hours
8.80 hours -> 8.75 hours
etc.

This is even more complicated than I thought.

Hours is N,5,2
So I need to separate the integer from the decimal.
Then see if the decimal is between .125 below or above .25 to determine if it should round to .25 (quarter hour).
I got .125 by dividing 7.5 minutes / 60.
Am I on the right track?

I have to disagree with you. You're not dealing with time that I can see. Purely numeric calculation.

Search the desktop area for Numeric Rounding for a helpful thread. August of 2009 is the one I found.

Hi Gab,

I don't have a function called "Round_Fraction".
I do have a "round_up" but it rounds up to the next integer.

Round_up(8.10,.25) = 9.00 It should be 8.25

Where can I find the Round_Fraction function?

I posted this function and other modifications thereof long time ago in response to a related thread.
This function allows you to round to any fraction.
Here is the function:

FUNCTION round_fraction AS N (base AS N, rounding_fraction AS N )
	dif=mod(base,rounding_fraction)
	mid=rounding_fraction/2
	if dif>=mid
	round_fraction=base-dif+rounding_fraction
	else
	round_fraction=base-dif
	end if	
END FUNCTION

I do remember that expression as well. It might have been Steve Andrews's. At any rate, I also do remember modifying it into a function in order to accept any fraction, not just a quarter.
Here is the function:

FUNCTION round_frctn AS N (base AS N, fraction AS N )
	round_frctn=round(base*1/fraction,0)*fraction
END FUNCTION

Not to be a killjoy but if this is related to payroll time you might want to check with your state as to where the cutoff is for what fraction constitutes rounding up or down. Here in CA it is .08 hours goes to .25

Can you expound on this please? I have been doing payroll for years in California and have never heard nor found reference to this rounding rule. After reading your comment, I dug some more into it and still can find nothing.
What I did find was a CA Supreme Court ruling saying that federal law should be applied, and that rounding punch-in and -out times was acceptable. Referencing 08, the mention was that a punch out time of 5:08 was to be rounded to 5:15 in a quarter-hour rounding basis.
