Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Color for ui_get_file ?

One of my wiser ladies finally complained in a most useful way. This script, which starts with ui_get_file, is going wrong because the users can't find the target file. If it isn't on the screen in front of them, they don't know what to do and sometimes make horrid guesses.

So I shall change the old Title "Copy new files FROM:" to "Be sure you are copying zips from the right place:" but is there any way to make that red?

I'm not even sure how to search if the left pane of one's Windows Explorer is not a tree, nor do I want to explain that to those who don't need to know.

Can you not start the lookup in the correct subfolder?
    dim defdir as C = "c:\documents"
    filename = ui_get_file("Select File", "", defdir +"\*.*")

I don't know the correct folder. Usually (but not always) the file will be emailed, and there's no telling where those attachments go. Sometimes the file will be on a thumbdrive passed around. And I keep a copy on Skydrive - which confuses everyone.

        Well, thats kind of random.
A message in red is not much of a solution.
        Centralize all such files.

Maybe a variation on Ray's idea. Create a starting point directory on the users' machines. Code the ui_get_file() to start there. In that directory place shortcuts to all known likely directories the file might be found.
          There can be only one.

An Xdialog might be useful here as you can format the color for any static text.

              Re: Color for ui_get_file ?

Xdialog is a lot more work than I am willing to spend to color a phrase. We'll stick with the wordy title for now.

The idea is to put some files into users' X:\A5V11\Archives. X varies, and the files can come in email or on thumb drive or via download or such. Folks here would just use Windows Explorer or their pet substitute.

If you put a folder on their desktop mapped to their x:\A5v11\Archives folder, they can just open that folder and drag their files coming from whereever into it. Also modify the folder icon so it is easy to identify. And since it is now on their desktop, they only need to look there.

Basically, Ray had the right thought. Make sure all files go to the same place on the server. Searches can then know where to find them. Most of my clients have folders for emailin, emailout, pdfin, pdfout, etc. so an search can be made to that spot you are most likely to find.
Training seems to always be the second part.

There is no server. If the ladies knew how to put the file in a specific place, we would just put it in the app folder to start with.

I've just gone a TeamViewer round with practice changing the Open box to Desktop or the thumbdrive. Maybe some of it will stick.

Are all of you working on separate applications, completely stand alone?
                      No local area network?

                        Re: Color for ui_get_file ?

Every now and then council gives us a network long enough to miss it when it's gone. A few ladies work on specific tables. We have scripts so they can share their recent work, usually via thumbdrive or email. Most ladies use the whole app for reference. But if I want to change a form or report or such, I distribute the appropriate *.dd? or the like.

The table changing ladies know how to find a file to "Open." The ladies who just get new forms or such are not as experienced in locating files.
