Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Embedded browse table pointer

    I have an app where I copied a bunch of forms w. embedded browses to new identical tables. But when I look at "browse properties/setup/primary table" the value is blank. When I click the dropdown and select the table A5 immediately crashes. The browse seems to work okay w/o assigning the table, but not browse "events". I need that event code to work. Anyway, is there a trick anyone found to set the browse to the table? Recreating these browses from scratch is a big job.

    Have you tried adding one of the browses to the control library? If the table is the same, you ought to be able to drop the control on the form. You would still have to delete the original browse first when you edit the form. Not saying it will work, since I haven't tried it...

      Robin,

      How do I add the embedded browse to a control library?
      What's a control library?

        Just for fun try converting the data dictionaries containing the forms in question to tables.

        If the form is based on a set then:
        <file>.set -> <file>.dbf
        <file>.sem -> <file>.fpt
        <file>.sex -> <file>.cdx

        If the form is based on a table then:
        <file>.ddd -> <file>.dbf
        <file>.ddm -> <file>.fpt
        <file>.ddx -> <file>.cdx

        add the <file>.dbf to a test database and open it. The code for the form is stored as a memo field. Might be able to locate the area that needs to be changed and manually add it. Once done change the extensions back and test.

        I recommend doing this with back up copies and not your actual live copy. Good chance you can make the data dictionaries go splat.

        I once had to do this to correct several sets that were copied from one directory to another however the sets decided to maintain absolute path information instead of relative paths. So converted the set data dictionaries to a table and made the needed change.

          1. When I do that type of rename (and I do), I do it in another directory and another workspace.

          2. If the set is pointing at the wrong tables, use the utilities to redirect to the proper tables.
          control panel (tables/sets) - right click the set - utilities - repair set - step through each table to keep or reset the table location.

              Preston, same app as what?

                So are the identical tables in the same app as the bunch of forms with embedded browses you copied them from?

                        Re: the Control Library

                        Open the original form in design mode
                        Open the Toolbox
                        Highlight the browse and right click
                        Select 'Add selected controls to control library' (at the bottom of the list)
                        Name the saved control something like Brw_yourformname or Brw_tablename

                        Open the form from the copied files
                        delete the existing browse and save the form
                        open the Toolbox and click on the Control Library (selection may not appear until you have a saved control?)
                        click on the new Brw_* control
                        draw the browse onto the form and your browse will appear.

                            My situation is a little bit different, although the objective is still to copy an embedded browse that will take hours to re-create. I've followed Robin's instructions on adding the brows to the control library. However, whenever I try to add the browse from the control library to a different form , I get a browse containing all the table fields, not the designed browse I added. The source form is based on a set. Does that make a difference? The browse only has fields from one child table.

                              Hi Finian,
                              I don't know if I ever tried it with a set or not. I think an Xd browse might be a better choice for a set. It would be interesting to see if that code could then be embedded into a form...although I have had pretty good success getting the Xd itself to offer much of what I would use the form for. Things like searches, browse buttons, double click events, etc - and you can roll them up!

                              xdbrws_20160615.jpg

                              I'm working on a feature that will add a bitmap only button to the column title and when pushed displays a text box for a var on top of the column title to do a quick find in that column on depart and uses the current sort order. It hides after the search so the column title can still be sorted again - and it displays both the sort_icon button and my button. (An idea I got from Mike Wilson here - and also from a peek at WinDev)

                              ps: In the meantime, if you are only displaying fields in the browse from one table, why not copy the browse to that table, then you should be able to add it to the control library.
