Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Code Editor Overwrites Script

Has anyone else had this happen? I was editing several scripts and when finished closed the Code Editor and saved all at the prompt. Later I went to use a script and discovered it had been overwritten by another script I had opened previously. And we are not talking a copy paste scenario. The code in question was only being viewed, not copied or edited.

    Grrr...

Yes. I use the export option often.

This has been discussed a lot.

      Hi Al,
Now that I have this post, I can see more links at the bottom. Funny how a search on "Code Editor" didn't bring any of them up before. I too had a an export for this script, unfortunately it wasn't the most recent version ;(

Yes the magic of the Similar Threads - great linking of issues. Almost makes you want to post a question just to get the Similar Threads...

No, but I never use the "Save All". I save each script independently after I edit it.

D*mn this is miserable. It has been going on since v9 apparently - 6 years!

The Code Editor is a great tool - but this is a killer...makes me want to jump ship.

If someone knows of a sure fire way to avoid this bug - please share!

I never "Save All" but save each script as I finish editing it. I may have 8 to 10 scripts open on the code tab but because I edit a script, save it and then test it, I never have a need to use the "Save All" and there for never have had any problems.

I will be jumping ship later this year anyway for other reasons as Alpha has gone down a path I do not want to follow.

                    Re: Code Editor Overwrites Script

                    Hi Preston,
I try to save every script before running too, but the overwritten script had not been saved and I missed it (though the one I was running was saved first). It happens. Anyway I found a function (there is also a shorter version - export_scripts_functions() ):

                    export_scripts_and_functions()

which suggests it be used in the Autoexec - so that ought to help me, cause I know I will miss it again...

Had a nice email chat with Cian - very fast response to my bug report. He said he had never been able to duplicate this phenomenon. Probably because he, (like you!) NEVER forgets to save...

Alpha has so many great features and tools - and the code editor is one of the best ones; learning to use them properly can be a challenge - which is why we need to share our finds here.

So if you take the jump, you might want to re-consider how great having this forum is.

I like Alpha but they are only interested in enterprise web apps now and the desktop stuff still looks like 1980 stuff. Yes it works but it seams you always have to find workarounds on some things which is not really a bad thing unless you are not selling apps.

The main thing Alpha has going for them is this forum but that is not enough to keep me using Alpha. If they did not have this forum then I do not think Alpha would survive.

I have been think about making the move to another solution for nearly 3 years now and I believe it is time for me to move on. I have found a solution that has a code editor that is actually better than Alpha's and works and looks the same when coding desktop, web or mobile.

Which is why I miss the loss of links in here - there were some great design examples for the desktop.
