Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error when loading application

Anyone come across this error during an installation of an application?

    Errors during load
    ---------------------------
Error running addin 'startup_xdialog_context' :Could not open OLE object 'a5contexteval.contexteval.11'

This is happening with ONE of my users. NOT all! The same app installs just fine on my laptop but not his desktop. He is running Windows 7 and this app is A5V11 runtime based. He does have both A5v11 and A5v10 on the same machine.

    Ideas anyone?

    Thanks,

    Gene

Sounds like a necessary dll has not been registered. Check the links in the "similar threads" list, below.

Also check the batch files for registering. Had one that was not included in the batch registration file that needed to be.

be sure all the following are in the bat file - the "/s" is so it is done quietly.

      regsvr32 Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx /s
      regsvr32 Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx /s
      regsvr32 Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx /s
      regsvr32 Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx /s
      regsvr32 a5controlsproxy.dll /s
      regsvr32 a5contextevalproxy.dll /s
      regsvr32 XBasicActiveScriptingproxy.dll /s

If you have a copy of that file from a computer that works, try copying it over to this pc. I'll bet when you do, you'll find there are other files that report the same error. When it happened to me it was a bad download from a v11 update. Re-downloading and reinstalling fixed the errors.

btw Tom - none of the links below offer any solution!

Robin, thanks for that. I am guilty of making an assumption. This problem occurs fairly often. The subject lines in the "similar threads" seemed relevant. Did not check them. Sorry, Gene. Hope you didn't waste too much time on my account. -- tom

And there in lies the problem. The A5ContextEval.dll are different between V10 and V11. I am not sure if it is a Win 7 problem or an Alpha problem but only one version of the A5ContexEval will be register at a time.

If he runs your app "As Administrator" then it will register the V11 version and then if he runs the V10 app he will get the error.

            Solution/s .

            1. Set all his Alpha apps to "Run as Administrator" and then it will re-register the correct version of the dll files each time he start one of the apps.
            2. Set his V10 app t run under the V11 runtime. Then run one of the apps "As Administrator" one time to register all dll and ocx files for V11.
            3. If your app does not have any V11 specific code then set the desktop shortcut to open it using V10 on his machine.

Option 2 is the best unless he is using V10 developer instead of runtime.

              Thanks Preston.

Tom, your suggestion did not work for him. I added it to the bat file just the same. Can't hurt!

Preston; This user is using V10 developer. I will pass on your suggestion and see if he can work through it.

              Thanks,

Since he is using V10 developer then you may want to test your app under V10.

Running a V11 RT app with V10 or even a different version of V11 may cause problems.
I have bumped into this issue before.
As Preston said, test with the same version.

                    Re: Error when loading application

                    Hi gang.

The solution for those users that have multiple versions of Alpha is to ALWAYS run ALL Alpha based applications with the same version of Runtime, whichever version you choose.

I would expect this to solve the problem unless an application uses functions that are not compatible with the chosen version. If this happens, the user will have to run the "incompatible" version on a separate machine or open each application as a Manager using the Runtime version that each application was built with. This would not be acceptable to everyone.

                      Re: Error when loading application

To cause a user to have to use the proper runtime:

you can check for that and close the app if it is opened with the wrong version

I do that on one application where the company moved to v12 and did all the programming changes needed, but the users still have V8 rt installed on their computers and tend to try and use that instead out of habit.
It simply pops up telling them "Wrong Version", waits 3 seconds and closes.

                        Re: Error when loading application

                        Thanks Dave.

In this particular case, my user supports clients that use various applications over several versions of RT and needs all versions for historical support potential. Not your typical scenario.

I thought that using your recommended bat file solution may do the trick regardless of which RT they start with if all the DLL's were included. So, my latest "correction" attempt is to add your prior list plus A5ContextEval.dll to the startup.bat file.

                        regsvr32 Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx /s
                        regsvr32 Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx /s
                        regsvr32 Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx /s
                        regsvr32 Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx /s
                        regsvr32 a5controlsproxy.dll /s
                        regsvr32 a5contextevalproxy.dll /s
                        regsvr32 XBasicActiveScriptingproxy.dll /s
                        regsvr32 A5ContextEval.dll /s

Would you consider this list to be complete or should I add other DLL's to create a complete list?

Is my assumption that having a startup.bat file that contains this list of commands which is called with every RT, regardless of version, will ensure that this "missing file" error will become history?
