Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Data from a DBF query to string

    On the web side and sql using xbasic i can fetch a result of a query and then convert that to a desirable format like .toJson for JSON format and .toString for string format.
    Is there any equivalent function for dbf when you fetch the result of a query, like.
    if i have table tableA and one of the record is
    id=1, name="gandhi", address="33 east end ave",city="new york",state="ny",zipcode="10028"
    i want to convert the result of a query to
    1,"gandhi","33 east end ave","new york","ny","10028"
    or should i just build it myself with
    result = tableA.id +","+ tableA.name +","++tableA.address+","+tableA.city+","+tableA.state+","+tableA.zipcode

    appreciate any suggestions.

    See if this works.

    Code:
    dim tbl as P
    tbl = table.open("dept")
    flds = tbl.field_name_get()
    flds = strtran(flds,crlf()," +\",\"+ ")
    rec_data = tbl.record_content_get(flds)
    tbl.close()
    There can be only one.

      See also CRLF_TO_COMMA() for the field string.

        You need the plus signs for the expression parameter in .record_content_get().

          thanks stan
          it works perfect. but it gives all the data from the table but the result is what i am looking for.
          i will play with it to yield a single record, probably query create etc.,
          thanks again.

            yes, tbl.query_create("", "id=2")
            like that works perfect

              Of course you are right as the help shows this:

              tbl.record_content_get("lastname + bill_state_region")

              But you added the commas to the string first and it still worked - I don't get it.

              Code:
              flds = strtran(flds,crlf()," +\",\"+ ")
              ?flds

                the spaces at the end of each field do not appear here but they do in the IW.
                use code to show the way it appears in IW.

                  Note, below doesn't work. Docs say the expression parameter has to reference fields but adding the alltrim() to the expression causes it to fail. Could be bug or my lack of understanding.

                  Code:
                  dim tbl as P
                  tbl = table.open("dept")
                  flds = tbl.field_name_get()
                  flds = *for_each(foo,"alltrim("+foo.value+")",flds)
                  flds = strtran(flds,crlf()," +\",\"+ ")
                  rec_data = tbl.record_content_get(flds)
                  tbl.close()

                    it appears that the field list is just a template
                    so commas are included in the string result.

                      I can see that trimming the field name string would have no effect - but what about the rec_data sting after the data is parsed?

                      Perhaps rec_data could be turned back into a crlf list, trimmed, and then put into the comma string? hmmm...That might work for one record but otherwise you would need to add a different tag to find the end of each record before putting it back to commas - or some such thing.

                          that will take the same effort to get individual fields and construct the rec_data,
                          that is the reason i was looking to get an easy method.
