Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tax Table

    Good Morning,

    I have an employee file, let's assume, with employees, with wages. I'm trying, without much luck, to build a tax table. Here's how it looks, so far:

    EMPL WAGES Desired answer: TAX
    001 12000 350
    002 25000 1200
    003 42000 3900

    WAGES TAX PLUS OVER
    10000 100 .10 10000 answer s/b = (12500 - 10000) * .10 + 100 = 350 for employee 001
    20000 200 .20 20000 answer s/b = (25000 - 20000) * .20 + 200 = 1200 for employee 002
    30000 300 .30 30000 answer s/b = (42000 - 30000) * .30 + 300 = 3900 for employee 003

    I tried ASCENDING as well as DESCENDING key, on WAGES, but can't seem to get the desired results.

    When I find a hit, how can I get that value back in my master file ?

    Need some help on this one.

    Thanks, as always

    Re: Tax Table

    Most payroll services calculate the tax based on first computing the gross annual wage using the current gross pay. So if his pay is $500 one week, you will need a calc field to find the range for the annual gross earnings and then the marital status to get the tax rate from your table to calculate his fed w/tax. Whereas each state may do this differently.

    This is outdated but should give you an idea of how I do the calculations (the tax tables are from 2015):

    Once I find the taxid, then I use the corresponding rate to calculate the tax.

      Robin,

      Thanks for the reply. However, I do understand how tax tables work but, the question I have is more in what I find and how to get it into the file. Can you expand just a bit on that ? And, it's not a Payroll Tax Table I'm trying to construct.

        Hi Lar,
        I updated the attachment to show my form. Let me know if that helps.

          Robin,

          Perhaps I should have been more specific.

          Here's my lookup expression:

          lookupn("C",TOTH,"e3*rate3","ghtax01.dbf","e1ASC") and then I tried
          lookupn("C",TOTH,"e3*rate3","ghtax01.dbf","e1ASC") without any luck.

          I'm trying to understand, and I did at one time, how to get the valuation of the "e3*rate3" returned to the file, and into a different variable.

          Any ideas ?

          Lar

            Without sharing tables, I doubt either of us will understand the other!

              Larry,

              This expression will not work because wrong syntax.
              Code:
              lookupn("C",TOTH,"e3*rate3","ghtax01.dbf","e1ASC")

              LOOKUP( ) is easier than other Lookup*()
              Code:
              Return value (variable Name) = LOOKUP( Lookup_Table as C, Filter as C, Lookup_Expression as C )

              Step 1 - find the tax rate from table with filter expression

              vFindTax = *depend on your table structure
              vTaxRate = LOOKUP( "ghtax01.dbf", "Table's Key_id="+quote(vfindTax), "Rate3" )

              Step 2 - Calculate with the vTaxRate
              vPayrollTax = e3(*Earned_wage?) * vTaxRate
              vCheckAmount = e3(*Earned_wage?) - vPayrollTax
              or
              vCheckAmount = earned_wage- (E3*vTaxRate)

                Re: Tax Table

                I built tax tables from the federal guidelines
                I had records by the year because they generally change every year.
                so tables reflected year, amount earned by day, week, bi-weekly, bi monthly, monthly quarterly, and so on to by the year
                the lookup for the tax rate also entails married, single, number dependents.
                Point is that it is NOT easy to build, but it IS dead accurate.
                Probably simpler(maybe cheaper) to use quick books
                I did this in a4 and it always worked, but started 3-4 times now to do it in a5, but always got distracted and never completed.
                these may help

                pr1.png pr2.png

                last time I really worked on this, it was in c:\payroll\
                you can download a zip right here and carry on or at least get a few ideas from it.

                http://aldaweb.com/dload/payroll.zip

                It was 2007 and version 7, but will be just fine in later versions - I tested first. I may yet finish it and put it on the market. User can update each year with the new tax tables.
                In the dos version, they did that before the first payroll period of a new year. It was written then to handle stuff like 401k, insurance, and all other instances that might come up as well as commissions and hourly/weekly/monthly pay. It also handled loans by employees which I never got started on with this one.
