The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RDP sessions

    I have a desktop application which users within our company access via remote desktop sessions. When the session is closed A5 does not remember the directory settings, and when the user attempts to reopen the database the startup form will not load - the control panel shows instead. The user need to go to view -> settings -> directories and click ok without changing anything, close alpha 5 and then click the desktop shortcut and it all works fine from there. This also occurs before security parameters such as "hide the control panel" are enacted. I have tried everything to solve this problem, working with the shared path names, but to no avail. The problem does not occur when running the same app over a LAN, nor does it recur if the session is disconnected or the database closed and opened again - only the first time on a remote rdp session. I must be missing something - is it the shared path settings, or a TS (2008 R2) issue?

    Rob, Not sure if I can help, but we have no trouble with our RDP sessions. I have a dedicated RDP computer for each person logging in, (3). These computers are not used until a person logs in. In fact, they don't even have monitors connected to them. When the person does a RDP log in, they are logging in to a windows 7 computer. On the desktop is a shortcut that opens the desktop application built from the Alpha control panel. Tools -> Create Shortcut. In the windows 7 startup folder is reference to the shortcut. So when the RDP user logs in, the shortcut opens my Alpha desktop application.

    Works fine.

    I just took another look at your post. Are you using RDP or Terminal services. I'm using RDP.

      Something is abnormal here.

      Do you start Alpha with an Alpha generated shortcut generated from the database?

      A windows permissions issue to the shared directory? what is the value for the shared directory?

      I'm not sure what Ron is suggesting, but you'll get much better performance from your server. Just need to solve this issue.

        Not sure what is going on with your situation. I would start with investigating if it is a permissions issue. Are you users limited in such a way that the Alpha5 settings are being cleared upon log off of the user.

          Thanks for all the suggestions. I have looked at user permissions on the folders, but the rdp session and the LAN session have the same settings.

          Yes the app is started from the desktop shortcut.

          Any further thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

            You cannot compare RDP to LAN.

            Create a test RDP account, set it up exactly like the other accounts. Get it to the point where it is replicating the issues described by your current RDP user base.

              We have a Win 2008 R2 terminal server that all our users access through RDP. The server has v10 and v11 Dev and RT. The corporate application (URSA) is in C:\URSA\. Each user has a certificate registered on their personal machines to access the server and an RDP shortcut made through the Win RDP installer that resides on their personal machine desktop. Through that RDP shortcut made by the installer, on their personal machines, a user logs onto the server with the server login credentials and, opened to them, is their specific user desktop on the server. On every users' desktop on the server is a shortcut that I built to open URSA. For me, it opens URSA in Alpha developer, everyone else, it opens with RT. There is no other way that I know of for true and robust RDP to work. We had to get certificates and each certificate registered and each user registered in the Remote Desktop Manager of the server, and everyone has their own desktop.

              For every user, there are TWO desktops and TWO shortcuts, their personal machine desktop with a shortcut to log into the server, and their server desktop with a shortcut to the A5 application. I cannot tell from your description, Rob, if you have everything truly set up for this level of RDP services.

                Thanks all. I have found the solution. My setup is the same as Mike outlined, with local desktops for LAN users and remote desktops for others. The shortcuts are different, and all remote desktop users must have appropriate permissions to access remotely.

                The problem is with the windows temp file. On an rdp connection Alpha 5 uses a location in the server users folder, which may get cleared out (by the server) at the end of the rdp session. On a LAN session this is a local machine location hence there is no problem.

                I have unchecked the private path "use windows temporary file" box and set all users to use "C:\windows\temp" as their private path. This fixed the problem - users no longer need to open "view->settings->directories" each time they commnce a new rdp session.
