Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 5 V11: Should I stay or should I go?

I have been very pleased with Alpha 5 for many years. With the great help from this board, I have created a very large system for my small business. However, I now have two problems, both of which have been discussed here many times. (i) My app runs on Win 10 PC's but my V11 Developer does not, especially in regard to WAS development, and (ii) I cannot justify the cost of the subscriptions for V12 etc.

I keep an old XP machine exclusively for my Alpha development, but the old XP PC is about to retire/expire...

It appears as though Alpha 5 no longer want 'low level' users like me - I've never sold any software/program that I have written. It looks like they only want professional developers. So what should I do? I would have upgraded to Alpha Anywhere under the old purchase method, as I wouldn't mind playing about with smartphone app development. Plus it would be 100% Win 10 compatible. Plus I'm fed up with my browse records jumping about in V11 desktop. But I am not prepared to pay $1,000's on an annual basis. I understand that even if I made a one year commitment to Alpha Anywhere, that it would 'stop' if I then failed to pay the next years subscription. Meanwhile my time is running out on the old XP.

I understand that many professional developers have left Alpha 5, but where did they go and what migration problems would they have faced?

no body can make that decision for you except yourself.
but alpha version 11 ( i am one of those who will not move up to version 12 for the same reason you pointed out) works well in windows 7 and they are available plenty on the market and version 11 works well in windows 10 also if you use live preview than working preview for web development. i think ted giles has some method to make it work in working preview too, you can ask him about that.
version 12 is heavy on the mobile side, desktop and web are not their prime concern ( many will dispute, let them) if you are using this for your own use i think you can get some more mileage with windows 7 computers and other free software stuff available on the net.
these are obviously my opinion, not knowing the extent of your program or your requirement.
    thanks for reading

Re: Alpha 5 V11: Should I stay or should I go?

Thanks very much for the advice. I think I will do as you say - go back to Win 7 Pro with my V11 Developer. In about six months time I will review the situation with Alpha and if no change on sales policy, I will move away to another platform.

        Greetings -
I checked with Alpha about AlphaAnywhere and received a reply from sales stating that "We still carry a complete line of desktop solutions" and the price is very reasonable.
        Send them an email.

Please let me know Larry if you find a solution to your problem. I am in the same boat and hate the idea that I would have to abandon my years of work ( I was an early adapter) in building my Alpha applications. I was offered a discounted version of 12 but it was too buggy to be useful. I wish there was pricing system that accounted for users like the two of us.

            @ Larry
You don't need to purchase a subscription for desktop solutions, you can buy V12 for desktop with runtime included for $499 (last time I checked).

The big question is whether the license is "perpetual" or is the license subscription based. I purchased my licenses years ago so when the subscription expires, the software still works. The only limitation is that I can no longer install any new updates.

I have the desktop only. It has expired now for 4 months. I think it was about 500.00

dev still works to that point and I can still use the runtime.

Just don't patch past the expiration date

Larry, after Christmas perhaps we can chat about options.
Ping me a PM and we can arrange it.
I stuck with V11 and have V12 but don't use it.
If you are after Web dev stuff, we may have an interesting chat!

You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Re: Alpha 5 V11: Should I stay or should I go?

                    Larry,

I run V11 on my Win 10 machines all the time without any problems and I have a lot of customers that also use Win 10 machines.

The only major problem I have run into on Win 10 is when windows does an update it removes permissions for the amyuni printer.

Now all that said, I only do desktop with Alpha. I do not like their web stuff at all. But that is my opinion.

I will keep using v11 as long as it still works but I am moving to another development platform sometime in 2017. I just cannot stay with Alpha under its subscription model and the direction they are going with their web stuff. Like you said, Alpha seems to only want enterprise level developers now and does not really want to caterer to the small developer anymore. Again, that is my opinion.

Thanks to all of you for replying to this thread.

While it is true, that Alpha is seeing growing adoption in medium and large customers (mainly because of its unique mobile and web capabilities that these companies find appealing ,) we have not forgotten our roots.

If you would like to have your situation treated on a custom basis, based on your specific situation, then email me at [email protected] with details of your situation and I will work hard to see how we can accommodate your specific set of circumstances.

I have a customer still on v11 and so I am still running v11 a a win/10 workstation. I upgraded to Win/10 and did not install v11 after that. However, I have an employee that ran into issues with v11 that he installed after upgrading to win/10.
