Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Line of code failed after adding 2 additional values

    This line works perfectly.

    gNumb3 = convert_type(a5_eval_expression("=tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype.AND.Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and.award="+chr(92)+"""+chr(92)+"" ","scoreaveg")",local_variables()),"n")

    This line fails after adding .and. Seq_Field<>"makeup" .and. Var->gEnfMKR<>"yes" or either one by it self.

    gNumb3 = convert_type(a5_eval_expression("=tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype.AND.Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. Seq_Field<>"makeup" .and. Var->gEnfMKR<>"yes" .and.award="+chr(92)+"""+chr(92)+"" ","scoreaveg")",local_variables()),"n")

    All the VAR are global and the 'Seq_Field' is a field, just as the 'award' in the t_scoring table.

    How should I code those 2 new additions?

    Mike

    You should look at this with debug(1) in the line prior to the value getting set and watch the variable gNumb3

      Thanks for taking the time.
      As I see the gnumber3 becomes 30 as it is supposed to get if no additional code.
      If the codes were added and recognized the value should have been 27. (in This particular run)
      Introducing either of the assign values, gnumber3 remains at 0.
      The values in the 2 new additions is confirmed to be correct.
      The syntax I am using must be wrong.

        I think I remember telling you before. Be careful when you see/add quote marks inside of other quote marks. When you add

        .and. Seq_Field<>"makeup" (or the other)

        inside of the tablemax filter parameter you break the string. Explicit quotes inside of outer quotes must be escaped or converted to single quotes where possible.

        Try the tablemax as

        Code:
        tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype .AND. Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. award=\"\" .and. Seq_Field<>\"makeup\" .and. Var->gEnfMKR<>\"yes\" ","scoreaveg")
        or

        Code:
        tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype .AND. Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. award='' .and. Seq_Field<>'makeup' .and. Var->gEnfMKR<>'yes' ","scoreaveg")
        After award = there are two single quotes, not one double.
        There can be only one.

          Change to something like this....

          Code:
          dim [B]myfilter[/B] as C

          [B]myfilter[/B]="Comptype=Var->gComptype.AND.Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. Seq_Field<>"makeup" .and. Var->gEnfMKR<>"yes" .and.award="+chr(92)+"""+chr(92)+"" "

          gNumb3 = convert_type(a5_eval_expression("=tablemax("t_scoring",[B]myfilter[/B],"scoreaveg")",local_variables()),"n")
          with the appropriate \ in the right place until myfilter looks right. Or as Stan says - use single quotes when you can.

          I tend to use a substr() to put values in expressions until I get it correctly syntaxed.
          There are other ways to put values into expressions. Everyone has their favorite.

          Then you can watch myfilter with debug(1)

          I always like to see the filter expression prior to execution. At least until I get it right.

            Re: Line of code failed after adding 2 additional values

            Thanks to all for the help. Yes I was able to use the codes.
            I tried all codes lines mentioned above.
            I did finally selected this one:
            gNumb3 = tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype .AND. Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. award='' .and. Seq_Field<>'makeup' ","scoreaveg")

            But it did not worked until I did trim seq_field.

            gNumb3 = tablemax("t_scoring","Comptype=Var->gComptype .AND. Actualcatclass=Var->gCat .and. award='' .and. trim(Seq_Field)<>'makeup' ","scoreaveg")

            Stan you are correct, I believe you said be aware of tablemax syntax.
            It was not until I saw the responses, that I was dealing with it.

            Thanks again to all.

              Re: Line of code failed after adding 2 additional values

              Mike,

              It is not limited to tablemax(). Any expression that involves a quoted string, usually a filter string, where you need to insert or add a quoted value must be constructed carefully. Alpha treats the second double quote in any sequence as the end of the string unless you tell Alpha otherwise.

              Code:
              ? "this is a string of words"
              = "this is a string of words"

              ? "this is a string of "words""
              ERROR: Extra characters at end of expression
              In the above, Alpha thinks the double quote preceeding the w in words is the end of the string is the end and everything after is some mistake.

              To tell Alpha that you have literal quotes within outer quotes......

              Code:
              ? "this is a string of \"words\""
              = this is a string of "words"

              ? "this is a string of 'words'"
              = "this is a string of 'words'"

              ? "this is a string of "+chr(34)+"words"+chr(34)
              = this is a string of "words"
              There can be only one.

                Excellent clarification.
                Quotes have been kind of questionable issue for me.
                This is a great help. Thanks
