Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I sort a character field containing number with and without deciamals

I have a character field in a table that contains a number. Right now the sort order is:

    1
    10
    11
    12
    2
    3
    4
    5
    5.1
    6
    6.1
    7
    8
    8.1
    9
    9.1

I would like the sort order to be:

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    5.1
    6
    6.1
    7
    8
    8.1
    9
    9.1
    10
    11
    12

Using padl() I can make it work until I add the decimal numbers. If at all possible, I really don't want to add ".0" to each number.
Almost all the entries will be just a whole number. Very few will have the decimal and those that do will usually be just a ".1".
I guess another option would be to add an "a" but then I think I really have the same problem.

    Thanks,

You obviously have a reason for it to be character and not numeric.

If possible in your situation use val(yourfieldname)
Maybe add a calculated field using the above and sort on that.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

      Code:
      Description

SORTSUBSTR() sorts a delimited string of values and returns the result in a string called Output_String. Direction is case sensitive.

      Examples

These examples sort "words" in a string. Note that a "word" can be defined by any delimiter.

      dim string as C
      dim sorted as C
      dim numberstring as C
      dim sortednumbers as C

string = "cde, abc, xyz, aad, gef"
      sorted = sortsubstr(string, ",", "A", "C")

      [COLOR="#FF0000"]numberstring = "12, 23, 123, 45, 456, 16, 56"    'convert your data to comma

      sortednumbers = sortsubstr(numberstring, ",", "A", "N")  'after sorted, convert to comma_to_crlf() [/COLOR]

Re: How do I sort a character field containing number with and without deciamals

The obvious reason is that the app was developed in 2003 and this methodology was used all over the application.
I did try val() and that didn't work. I probably should have mentioned that I need to use this sort order in a number of forms, browses, reports and scripts if possible.
I looked at sortsubstr(). I think it will work in scripts. I don't think I can use it to sort forms and browses.

          And how doesn't val() work?

The attached browse, Transno + val(Itemno).
            It starts with:

            1
            10
            11
            12
            2

              I figured it out.

              Code:
              transno+padl(if("." $ itemno=.F.,alltrim(itemno)+".0",alltrim(itemno) ),4,"0")
              order2.JPG

              Thanks for your help.

If you use it all the time, that would be a good one to save in the expression library.
