Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get selected object name before losing focus of current object

    I've been looking for a way to find out what object on a form the user has selected. I want to control whether they can depart an embedded browse based on which field they have selected to move to with the mouse. I've tried .active() but that just returns the browse control whether the code is in the CanDepart or OnDepart event. Been searching through the many functions but to no avail.

    Anyone know if this is possible and if so how?

    Seems a contradiction in logic. You want to code the ondepart or candepart to test for something that happens after both of those fire. In other words, the object that they select by mouse - after they have departed the browse. They have to depart the browse to be able to select an object outside the browse.

    Seems to me you would have to code the canarrive of the possible moused to objects and refer to <OBJECT>.ACTIVE_PREV() to see if the browse was the prior location.

    If the form has a relatively small number of fields you might consider disabling all but the desired destination objects in the ondepart of the browse.

      Indeed, neither of those events work although the OnDepart is meant to be after the browse has lost focus so shouldn't really return the browse as the active object. Or is focus and active different things entirely?

      Thanks though Stan I'll take a look at the CanArrive and see if it will do what I need. I was hoping for a special magic function that returned the object name of the mouse selection to make life easier. A5 must have it to know where its destination is just not available as an event or function for our use.

        My previous thought was wrong.

        The trace window reveals that the order of event execution when moving from one object to the next (when leaving a browse at least) is

        canarrive for target object
        candepart for active object
        ondepart for active object
        onarrive to target object

          Not sure if this is any better but you can

          code the onarrive for the browse
          dim shared targetobj as C
          targetobj = ""

          code the canarrive for the desired target objects
          dim shared targetobj as C
          targetobj = this.name()

          code the candepart for the browse
          dim shared targetobj as C
          if inlist(targetobj,"name1","name2","etc")
          'ok
          else
          cancel()
          'msgbox("you need to....")
          end if
          There can be only one.

              Glad to help. If there's a kludge that will do the job I can usually find it.
