Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do you remove a carriage return from text in a field

    I have a field (C,250,0) for users to enter text. The field is in a browse. As the text would be too long to display as a single row in the browse, by default the browse displays 3 rows.
    The normal data entry would be to type in text as a single row word wrapping to the next row. My user has entered some text on the first row, pressed the enter key and entered text in the second row.

    Light bulb inop.
    P/N 12345

    Instead of:

    Light bulb inop. P/N 12345

    This has broken some of my code in a different location. Is it possible to strip out the carriage return. My thought was remspecial(), but that would remove too much.

    I tried strtran(Fieldname,"<CR>") but that didn't work.

    Thanks

    A solo carriage return is chr(13), solo line feed chr(10), and there is always crlf() for the combination - depending on what is actually created by "pressed the enter key and entered text in the second row."
    There can be only one.

      Is there some way to see what the invisible text is?

        Export the record or just the field to a csv file and get a free hex editor to see the encoding.

          Or the hard way. Note the record number (#) of a record with the problem characters.

          Code:
          tbl = table.open("yourtablename")
          tbl.fetch_goto(#)
          tst = tbl.thefieldname
          ? at(chr(10),tst)
          = 3
          ? at(chr(13),tst)
          = 0
          ? at(crlf(),tst)
          = 0
          tbl.close()
          'this indicates a chr(10) in the field
          Note: A crlf() actually consists of a chr(13)+chr(10) pair so if the problem is a crlf() in the field then you will get a number result for all three.

          Which means if you go the update operation route and update the field with

          field expression
          fieldname strtran(fieldname,chr(10),"")
          fieldname strtran(fieldname,chr(13),"")

          then it doesn't matter what was there originally.
          There can be only one.

            OK, as it turns out, it's a paragraph symbol, which is a CHR(20).
            However; for some reason your little script doesn't find it.

            Hmmm...

              Stan's script didn't look for it.

              That's why I suggested what I did as one alternative.

              The other would have been a loop to go through the character set for each letter in the text by looking for chr(n) for n = 1 to 256(or greater..)

                I did get it to work.
                mytext = stritran(mytext,CHR(10)," ")

                Thanks
