Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Spreadsheet replacement

    Hello Everyone

Just a quick question on direction.

Can this be reproduced in alpha?

The client is using a desktop application and wants to stop using a separate spreadsheet to report a forecast.

I made a report which worked well but the range of the forecast could be as much as 2 yrs and a paper report isn't practical.

So the question is xdialog or....... something else?

    Thank you for your time

    Regards,

    Keith

Are we looking at your report, or the spreadsheet being used currently?

      Hi Mike

The sample pdf is the spreadsheet that my client wants replaced.

My question is can something like this be created within alpha? If so, a dialog or something else?

      Thank you for your reply.

      Regards,

      Keith

        Hi Keith,
When you say "I made a report which worked well" exactly how did you do that? Have you already created your tables in Alpha?

          Hi Robin

          Thank you for your question

The report uses 36 calculated fields, 3 for each month (I found it here on the forum and modified it to fit my needs).

They use the spreadsheet to forecast project invoicing and some projects run as far out as 24months or longer so a "paper" report isn't practical.

They want to stop using the spreadsheet as they want to push a button, select a range and view the forecast.

The tables are made but I'm just at the beginning so not a big deal to change things.

I have a primary table storing the project information then a child storing the different phases information (start/end dates, invoicing, assignments, etc...)

So, can an alpha desktop dialog be used to make something that looks like the sample pdf? Or should I look at moving the project to the web to make use of the graphical tools (not something I'm looking forward to...)

Thank you again for your reply

          Regards,

          Keith

            Re: Spreadsheet replacement

My response is that you can certainly make such a report with these understandings:
            1. In my experience - The colors are a no go
            2. This is a huge coding exercise that will require the collection of the data and written to a temporary table that a report can be based on.

I would tackle this with a checkbook for this engagement that is virtually unliminted.

              Hi Mike,

              sorry for the delayed response

I agree this is a huge coding exercise, not sure my skills are up to the challenge....

I'm trying to stay away from a report and I'm attempting this via a xdialog but so far it's not going well.

My question would be can this be reproduced in a web application?

              Thank you for your reply.

                Re: Spreadsheet replacement

As Mike said, this would be really hard in xdialog. Not only are the colors hard, but xdialog is a terse and cryptic language. Formatting is very tricky in xdialog. Even something as basic as right aligning numbers in an xdialog list box is next to impossible. I would not recommend it.

Have you done stuff on the web? If you are half decent in xbasic and in web apps, you could create your app as a custom HTML table w/o too much difficulty, colors and all. It might even be possible to do as a custom UX list, but probably not as a grid. But if web is new to you you face an uphill battle.

                  Hi Peter

                  Thank you for your reply.

My xbasic and web skills are nothing to brag about so I think I'm in over my head on this one.

I'll give it shot in a web app as xdialog seems to be a dead horse at this point.

Thank you again for your reply
