Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

scroll Bar is extremely slow (15 minutes)

In a browse view of an active link table to MySql (216000 records), I tried moving down the scroll bar, it took 15 minutes to scroll down to record 181000.

Is this normal ? That can't be !!!!!!

Re: scroll Bar is extremely slow (15 minutes)

I am having similar problems with the new A5V9 Platinum, updating records from a browse in a form, and the file affected is a "DBF" file. It is so slow I had to go back to Version 7 until I can get some help from the Folks at Alpha Software.

My application is on a Network of about 15 - 20 users. If I make a copy of the application and put it on a single machine, it works fine.

If anyone has come accross this problem and has been able to fix it, please share the solution.

Have you got the latest patch? There definitely was an issue with the bubble help in browses slowing things down but at least for me this has vanished with the latest fix.

Thank you for your prompt reply!

Yes, I applied two patches that Alpha sent me last Friday, and today, I press the check for update button and applied the latest patches for both Development and Run Engine.

Sorry I just realised that you mentioned the slowness only occurs on a networked app, are you using network optimisation?

It runs better in optimized mode, but when we have a couple of users going at the same time, it slows down again.

The point is that I don't have the problem using Version 7 working of the same database, on the same network. So there must be something different between versions that is causing this.

Since there is a known scroll bar issue that *was* fixed in the last build I suspect that something was missed from the RT update or from other modules that are only used in multi-user apps.

Please download the latest update which should address your issue:

Here is an excerpt from the Update Release Notes that describes what setting you need to make to optimize the scrollbar logic.

Browse Performance - Networks - Large Tables - Some users have reported that when viewing a Browse, or a Form with an Embedded Browse, the Form or Browse seems slow compared with previous versions of Alpha Five. The issue only occurs when the data is being viewed over the network. There is no performance issue when the data is local.
There are significant differences between the Browse in V9 and previous versions of Alpha Five. A major advantage of the V9 Browse is that the position of the slider on the vertical scroll bar is truly proportional to the position of the current record within the current query. Also, the size of the vertical slider is proportional to the percentage of the records in the current query that are visible.
In V8 and previous versions, the vertical slider's position was only meaningful if the data was in record number order, and the size of the slider was never meaningful.
In order to get accurate information about the slider position and size, Alpha Five must read the table's index more frequently. On a large table, over a slow network, this can result in a performance degradation.
You can now use an Xbasic command to set a 'threshold' over which Alpha Five will revert to the V8 logic for the browse scrollbar. If the browse you are viewing has more than the 'threshold' number of records in the current view (i.e. query), Alpha Five will revert to the logic used in Version 8 and prior versions. To use the V9 logic, you set the threshold to 0 (the default value). To use the V8 scrollbar logic all the time, set the threshold to 1.
If you set the threshold to a value that is greater than 1, then the V8 logic will be used if there are more than the 'threshold' number of records in the current query. For example, if you want to revert to the old scroll bar logic if the current view has more than 100 records, set the threshold to 100.
If you experience a performance issue on your network, you can experiment with this command to determine the threshold value that is right for you, and you can put the command in your application's Autoexec script.
To set the threshold, use the a5.system_mode_set() function to set the value of the new index_pseudo_position_cutoff property. You can use a5.system_mode_get() to read the value of this property.

                Examples:
Read the current value of the property:
                ? a5.system_mode_get("index_pseudo_position_cutoff")
= "0" 'Indicates that the V9 scrollbar logic is being used

Use V8 (and older versions) scrollbar logic:
                a5.system_mode_set("index_pseudo_position_cutoff","1")

                Use V9 scrollbar logic:
                a5.system_mode_set("index_pseudo_position_cutoff","0")

Use V8 scrollbar logic if there are more than 1,000 records in the current view:
                a5.system_mode_set("index_pseudo_position_cutoff","1000")

Re: scroll Bar is extremely slow (15 minutes)

i just got to play with this. I have an embedded form that a query has about 100 records in it. Just about every column has a color calculation. When I click on the scroll bar, move down and then let off the scroll bar goes down where I had moved it to, but once I release the mouse button the scroll bar bounces back to the top. When I move down I have to hold the mouse button down for a few seconds to keep it from bouncing back. I have the latest update from today 5/6. Anyone else seeing this problem?

That is really the norm for this. My tables are relatively large and I can't use the scroll bar because of that specific issue.

With all due respect, it is absurd and simply not true to suggest that is this the 'norm'.

I can't say what there is about your application that might cause a slow scroll bar. You are welcome to send it to us and we will investigate it on your behalf.

This video show a 1,000,000 record MySQL table in an A5 active-link table. The performance is just fine.

I meant with my data Selwyn.
I have been an alpha5 user for a long time. That's one application I wouldn't give up no matter what.
But again in my active link application to MYSQL data the scroll bar acts wiered, the average size is 350,000, it's fine with alpha5 table regardless of the size.
if I get the table as passive link it's OK.

Database is big. I will try to break it down some so you can look at it. May be next week before I get time.

Weird in what way? I guess it would help if you put some words to what is going on that makes you say it is behaving weird. The browe for MySql behaves differently, but I would not say weird. I have Very large tables as well, but would question using a browse on a table that large to look for records, but hey, to each his own. I don't think that browsing through records in 350,000 record table is a fair way to determine performance. The recent changes made in alpha make a HUGE difference in performance. (fetch limit, fixing of some bugs etc)
