Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    When is Alpha5 v9 available?

As per subject title.. Can someone tell me when Alpha 5 v9 platinum will be available to buy?

Re: When is Alpha5 v9 available?

First off, welcome to the forum.

Check out the announcements section of the forum and read all of R. Rabins messages about Platinum. No date has been ever announced (as is the usual case with software companies). Inferences that we might see it towards the end of March or April have been seen but they were just that - inferred.

As this is your first post, I presume that you are considering purchasing Alpha. If so, now is the time not later! Why, because you get a licence for v8 and the total amount you spent is applied to your v9 purchase with a whole new licence. That's 2 licences for the price of one. And then you can use all this time actually using the product.

    Just a thought.

According to the promo I rec'd today:

In less than 30 days, Alpha Software will release Alpha Five Platinum Edition - by far the fastest, most powerful and comprehensive version of Alpha Five yet.

I've already been reading through those posts and as you say, there was no date, that's why I asked, thinking someone from AlphaSoftware would tell me. I've Emailed them twice over the last few weeks but never got a reply.

I presume that you are considering purchasing Alpha.
Correct. I've been nominated to upgrade our Company's database. I have to choose, install, learn and setup a new system, then convert the existing data over to the new format. This all has to be done during any spare time I have whilst doing my normal job (office mgr), as I'm the one with the most experience.

I setup our current DOS database in the 1980's. It's very robust, but is limited in what it can do compared to the new stuff now available. We therefore need to be brought up to date and take advantage of many new features. I researched the market looking for ease of use, ease of setting up, something that could be adapted to our way of doing things, that could be expanded with company requirements and something that had a good reputation. I read reviews, etc, and decided on either Filemaker Pro or Alpha 5.

People tell me A5 is harder and more long winded to setup than Filemaker which is extremely easy. Due to having v.little time available, quick and easy setup is what I want, but I also don't want to lose out on features, as I don't want to be having to change systems again in years to come. From what I've seen of the preview videos of A5v9, it looks likes it will do what I want plus a whole lot more, and it looks easy to setup with it's wysiwyg features.

Anyway, I told my boss what I'd decided, he had a quick look at the Alpha software and Filemaker websites, then said I could go for FilemakerPro right now, or (as long as it's not to long coming), hold off and wait for A5v9 as there's no point learning A5v8 then having to relearn a new system. This makes sense, but there is slight urgency as he would like the new system running for the new UK tax year which starts in April. I don't think I can do this though in the few weeks we have left in March! But I don't want him saying v9 is taking too long being released, and making me go for Filemaker Pro instead.

Now that's promising news... Thanks for this info.

Re: When is Alpha5 v9 available?

One thing about Alpha Five in all its versions is that the previous versions are compatible with the latest and greatest version.

Everything that you would create in Version 8 would be completed compatible with Version 9.

So you could start with version 8 and when version 9 comes out you could just load the program in version 9 and just learn the new things that are available in 9 or just use your version 8 apps as written.

That way you could have a very good base with version 8 and bring all that forward to version 9.

I have apps that were written in Version 7 then run in Version 8 and updated to the new things in 8 and ultimately will be turned into version 9 apps when it is released.

But I understand where your boss is coming from. Some of my older apps were written with dos versions of Alpha.

Is the information that you have now stored in standard .dbf files - Alpha will be able to read them (not the forms or rules etc. but the table itself). If they are excel or access, you can use the importing capabilities of Alpha Enterprise to read that information into Alpha tables.

The best part of Alpha is that it was orignally written for non-programmers and has been true to that ever since. (it also has the properties that developers and programmer can sink there teeth into). You can create robust applications using Alpha Five without any real programming background but with a lot of common sense.

Keep Alpha in your wish list - I think that you and your boss would be surprised how qucikly you can get something done in Alpha.

Good Luck with whatever road you take.

My beta trial expires in 6 days, but I don't care. I have done all the testing I need to do. I see tremendous opportunity in this new release.

Now I will just patiently wait until it is released and then stay up all night with it for a few days. I will be patient, but hurry!!

                  Wonnov -

Get started with A5v8 right now. Everything you do will work just fine with V9 and it'll all still be completely familiar. They don't change things -- they add them. And, your v8 purchase price will go 100% to a copy of V9 if I understand the advertising correctly. As they say, "don't delay." You have no reason to wait and every reason to get started.

                    Wonnov,

                    Steve is right!

move asap. i have been testing a large and complex app from v7 and again with the v8 counterpart and there were ABSOLUTELY NO surprises or differences.

You sound like you have a lot of basic work to do with data import/append/copy so the quicker you start, the better.

If you really want to wait, at least download the trial of V8 and get started.

You didn't say what kind of program or what it needs to do that you need, but there are a lot of folks on here that have made many various kinds of apps. You can get some great help.

As far as filemaker being easier - hmmm - not so sure about that. it may be easier to start, but when you get to the hard stuff, it just may not do it at all or take a very long time with a lot of convoluted methods to get it done.
