Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Any Joomla Users out there?

I just did a successful test publishing an Alpha5 page in the Joomla (Open Source) Content Management System. It's very cool.

Are there any other Alpha Five users using Joomla or another CMS?

Re: Any Joomla Users out there?

    Yup.

Well, perhaps you'd call me a "former" user. I'm actually leaning towards CMSMS to streamline the construction of *simple* websites. That's all I need for most projects anyways.

I'm new to A5, but have used Joomla extensively (Mambo before that) in the past for building websites. I was searching the boards to find info on integrating A5 developed pages with CMS pages. Looks like you've had some success.

How did you integrate the A5 stuff with Joomla? Are the A5 pages just static pages within Joomla? Did you need to use a bot? Construct a wrapper module or build a component in Joomla to make it work?

Re: Any Joomla Users out there?

I have been a Joomla based web developer since it's inception. I've created close to 100 sites over the years for everything from small home based buisnesses to corporates and Brand names...
since finding alpha Five (and only found it by accident by googling for a way to deliver online delivery of access database without using microsoft servers.

I'm really wanting to initially wrap alphafive pages into existin joomla framework until the time when I can totally do all I can do with joomla with alpha five v10. I can't se too many limitations as yet only possibility!

Is anyone else here still working with Joomla intergration with A5? I would definately enjoy to brainstorm ways of intergrating the two with anyone likeminded!

BTW Though I do know how to clean code html php css a little javascript and ajax and actionscript. I am in essence a graphic designer, so if anyone here requires the need for a designer willing to trade design for A5 I'm all ears!

I am matching my V10 version of the A5 Web Framework to Joomla, plus security, and other issues for a secure A5 website.

To draw a comparison between Joomla and Alpha Five - the former is a great content management system. Its great for managing articles and other content from different sources. But it is not a full web development kit like Alpha Five. You would not use Joomla to build anything that required a highly customized system. Very few of the things that I think we build can be done in a system like Joomla. But it does have some very nice methods for managing content - abilty to position content almost anywhere, ability to define basic page layout through settings (1-column, 2-column, etc.) and toggle banner logo and other images. It has nice methods to manage all images, WYSIWYG editors. Its got one very very nice feature where you can 'drop in' things such as breadcrumbs, statistics, and other web form features.

Re: Any Joomla Users out there?

I've been asked to redo our website, which is probably 10 years old. I had originally done it using Adobe PageMill, then migrated to Adobe GoLive 5. I haven't done anything since.

With all the new web technologies, and my growing fondness of using databases (gradually migrating from Access to Alpha Five v9), I'm wanting to explore other avenues to build the new site.

For the most part, the website I'm looking to build will be fairly minimalistic. We're a smallish company with 2 divisions: A. pipeline subcontractor, and B. equipment manufacturer. I will develop pages discussing the work each does, show off some of the projects completed, list the equipment available, etc. Some of this I would like to be database driven. I would also like to incorporate an employee portal, where people in the field can log in and fill out reports, print lists, etc.

I consider myself to be a novice with regards to A5V9. I have not yet tried any of the web creating tools. After doing some research, I'm really leaning towards trying A5 in conjunction with either Joomla or CMS Made Simple.

With all this in mind, do you think I might be trying to take on too much? I don't have any deadlines, and I'm always wanting to learn new things. It's just with a 60-hour work week and 2 hours of commuting every day, there's not a lot of spare time.

I would love to hear from the community with regards to there experiences with building websites with Alpha 5 and/or CMS's. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Can't say what's too much for you, but if you really plan on having a data driven web site to any significant degree, you definitely want to go w. v10. It's a huge improvement over ALL previous Alpha versions on the web side in terms of functionality, speed and ease of use. My 2-cents.

                    Hi Parish,

I don't have the experience to respond intelligently to many posts on this board, but in this case I felt that the opinions of another Alpha novice might be appropriate. Over the last couple of years I have built a large desktop application which assists in every area of my small business. A few weeks ago, like you, I decided it was time to replace my website. It did take me a couple of weeks to get to grips with the ALPHA WAS and to get my first attempt online - with some help from this board. However, I am now 'flying' and am publishing new sites every other minute! My main problem now is not a technical one - it's the 'pretty' stuff that I'm not too good at. I'm a menace with that colour picker...

My advice would be: go for it!

                    Kind regards
                    Larry

Larry, which version of Alpha are you using? From what I've read, and as Peter stated, V10 is supposed to have more bells and whistles for web-related databases. I just hate to fork out more money for a system, when I haven't fully utilized what versions 8 and 9 could do.

I am soldiering on with V9 - until the V10 price comes down or I am convinced that it is worth my while upgrading. V9 has a few issues, but none that you cannot work around; and I believe Alpha should really provide at least one more patch to fix the known problems.

Re: Any Joomla Users out there?

Larry, thanks for the email. I checked out your website and it looks good. That's about what I'm trying to do, showcase the company and provide a portal for my employees to retrieve and update information as needed when they're out in the field.

You had mentioned trying to polish your site up a bit. You might consider Artisteer. I haven't tried it yet, but supposedly it comes with may CSS templates. Not sure though if it plays well with A5.

Also, did you use A5v9 exclusively to make your website, or did you also use a content management system? I've setup XAMPP on my desktop for inhouse testing. I've also loaded up both Joomla and CMS Made Simple trying to figure out which one will work best for me. I'd also like to try out Alpha Five, but I'm really concerned about how well the server will work with my web hosting provider, and also, there's the issue of do I have to have to purchase an additional license (1 for test server, and 1 for web host provider)?

I used A5V9 exclusively - I wouldn't know where to begin with the other products you mention.
