Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Run Engine Question

I just read the information for the new Run Engine...am I interpreting the sales copy correctly in that I would have to by a license for EACH copy of the application I have created in A5 that I sell?

I believe that is what they are saying. Makes my decision to stay at Verzion 8 easier.

Please tell me this is not what they are saying! I agree...I simply would not be able to afford to upgrade.

That is what they are saying. One license per user.

Bummer... not AS bad though when you look at this part, as far as developers who sell on their software are concerned:

Note: Commercial developers who would like to develop a product powered by Alpha Five V9 Platinum Edition should contact Alpha Software about an OEM Run Engine.

I wonder how this works with things like Citrix and Terminal Services then?

Also - Remember, you get to KEEP your existing V8 licenses, so you can continue to distribute software written in V8 and only buy runtimes for those apps/customers who actually require them... Plus if you have WAS V8 you could theoretically install V9 on a different server and run two web app servers too...

This makes me very sad! All of the excitement that has built in anticipation of moving to V9 is gone.

The application that I built in version 8 only retails for 99 dollars. I will offer upgrade pricing but will not have an upgrade for 12+months. I just released the first edition of it a few weeks ago.

Furthermore...How would you distribute fully functioning demo versions of your app if you have to license each one?

If this is the case, this seems like a very significant and ongoing cost if you choose to use v9

Why is the price for the OEM Run Engine not listed. I hope it is not one of those "if you have to ask you cannot afford it" type situations:)

I suspect it's because it depends hugely on the situation, the amount of copies you need and so on... either that or they haven't decided yet?!

I can understand the reason for this licensing structure for a full SQL Database compatible version of A5 though - After all, with how easily you can export settings etc, between projects now, you could just create a few differently-named A5 databases (say, name it by department) and you'd be able to use a say 10 user runtime for as many departments and people as you want, because the active link tables can be created to a SQL Database from as many different A5 db/apps as you like...

That is a good question... you'd require the potential customer to download a trial of A5V9 in order to run your app I guess... Perhaps Alpha have a "Trial Runtime" in the works? E.g. a runtime engine you can compile your app with that automatically expires after 30 days - that WOULD be very useful for commercial developers, after all!

I clicked on the "Run Engines Explained" and can't go there. Apparently I'm on some sort of black list?

                          Re: New Run Engine Question

I don't think it is for each application.

This is how I interpret it:

Currently I have a V8 10 user license. I can create as many applications as I want, distribute them with the runtime, and 1 to 10 users can use my application on the same network, with the same database. There is no built in way that I am aware of to limit the number of users to a number less than 10. So I could creatively code in a way to limit it to less than 10, but no built in feature.

In V9 instead of buying 1 10 user runtime or run engine, I could buy 10 I user licenses, and create as many applications as I want, distribute them with the runtime, and any combination of 1-10 users can use my application on the same network, with the same database.

It gives the developer a lot more flexibility and control over how they price their software.

That's, if I read that correctly.

                            From the link above:-

"Run-Engines are licensed per installation, which means that each work station that the Run-Engine is installed on will require a license."

Which I take as every single PC that the runtime is installed on.

Yes, but the license would be one of the ones that I as a developer bought.
