Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

True... Either way, regardless of the cost, the longer I think about it, the more it sounds like you as a developer get a HELL of a lot more power to license this in a way that is much more "professional" than is currently the case...

      Re: New Run Engine Question

I guess it will come down to who the license is licensed to.

If it is licensed to the developer then maybe what Alan says is right.

But the way I read it, it will be licensed to the installation and that will mean you would need a license for every application that you have out there.

I think the key words are "the client will not have to buy a full version of Alpha5 V9" So in my opinion Alpha wants a piece of the action for everyone to whom you sell you application.

Just my thoughts - I may be wrong.

          Re: New Run Engine Question

Thats what I take from it Tom. I guess alphasoftware is entitled to price their product as they see fit. However, my concern is this...What happens when V8 is no longer supported or becomes dated to the point where it becomes necessary to upgrade? If I cannot afford to pay per license my applications become obsolete. This may be an unwarranted concern...but it is definitely floating around in my head right now.

Only if you develop software for clients custom-made - if you develop software sold commercially, the OEM licensing comes into play:
Note: Commercial developers who would like to develop a product powered by Alpha Five V9 Platinum Edition should contact Alpha Software about an OEM Run Engine.

              Hello All,

Yes it is still a little confusing. Just sent this off by email to sales, to see what the answer is. Interpitation is a funny/crazy thing.

              HTML Code:
              Hello,

Have been reading on the Alpha site about the new V9 runtime lic. Differences.

Say I purchase a 10 user V9 runtime with 1 license number. I develop an application that can be used at 3 locations with 10 people at each location.

Does the licensing still work the same, where I can purchase the one 10 user runtime, and use it with the one license at 3 locations?

Or do I the developer need to now buy 3 V9 10 user license numbers to distribute the application at the 3 locations, for 10 users at each location?

              Thanks

              Ed

                  Re: New Run Engine Question

Just my two cents, but it certainly looks to me like there is a "Y" in the road. Verison 8 will remain for the mom and pop application producers and Version 9 will be for the Corporate producers. With the ability to hook into live SQL, it seems that the increased pricing is valid in the eyes of Alpha. For those of us who are using single user or multiuser off line programs of Alpha, the added expense doesn't really make much sense, as there is no need to hook into SQL, and small database programs should not add an additional $100 per finished runtime application.

I just wish that some of the newly added features for the browse would drift down to Version 8, making that version really the product it should have been in the first place, as the new browse works so much better.
"Ollie, remember how dumb I used to be? Well, I'm much better now."

Yes it would be nice if there was a "No SQL" option for the added features like supercontrols....

Richard Rabins just replied to Chris Hawkes on another thread

I dont know if you noticed that we do offer "OEM RUN ENGINE PRICING" for precisely this scenario.

i.e. if you have built a commercial application that you are selling to multiple clients - you would qualify for OEM RUN ENGINE pricing that would fully take into account the price of your application to your customer and continue to make Alpha Five a very good choice from a development AND an economic point of view.

                      Sincerely

                            Thanks Tony

I think you will feel OK with this once you have spoken to our sales folks

We are not looking scare people away - we have built a fantastic product (yes I am biased :)) in PLATINUM and we want the world to be using it.
You dont achieve this objective with irrational pricing.

                                Richard,

Just to clarify something, the new run engine license only would affect someone who is selling a single application commercially. A developer who is (was) building custom apps for many clients has (or should have) always had to purchase a runtime license for each client. The last line of the current V8 runtime license states "If you are developing custom applications for various customers, then each customer is required to have their own runtime." It sounds like the current license is a shock to many, when in fact it is not really that different (except for the package selller)

SO for the "package" developers there is an oem license. And for the custom app developers there is a more secure, more flexible and simpler way to license their apps.

I view Platinum as a different product than V8 similar to say MS that sells 4 versions of Vista or about 8 versions of Office, all priced based on what is included.

Am I way off base or missing something?
