Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Run license changes from concurrent user to per seat

I have not heard anyone talk about this and for me it is the most significant change.

In the past if you bought a 10 user runtime, then 10 users could connect concurrently to the same database. The advantage for me in this scenario is that my users may have "occasional" or "casual" users that may want to look something up occasionally. That worked well in the previous model. The runtime could be installed on an unlimited number of workstations. If the casual user could not access the database due to "license count exceeded", no big deal - they would try later.

In the new model all users are treated the same. I have not kept up with M.S. licensing, but I know they wanted to push for this per seat model as well.

For me this means more licenses would be required than are now required for the same app and the same customer.

One solution could be to drive more development to the web where there is not a per seat cost. Of course there must be quite a few users to justify the cost if the WAS is not already in use for something else. I imagine Alpha might welcome this approach as a way to drive more interest in the web tools, which obviously are not currently as robust as the desktop tools.

    Bill.

Re: Run license changes from concurrent user to per seat

Bill, I agree that this is an issue for many of us.

I have a client where we have a 10 user license that runs 24/7 at a hospital. The shadowed app is installed on 250 workstations in the hospital, because the nurses are in a "roaming" department, and need to access it in different buildings, floors, etc. But the department rarely ever has more than a staff of 10 per shift, so a 10 user is adequate. I may be incorrect in interpreting the documentation, but it could be interpreted to mean we would need 250 licenses.

I have wondered for several years why Alpha didn't license their Runtime, and in general feel it is a reasonable and good move on their part. I have even heard of people buying a multi-user runtime and then giving it to others! An un-licensed runtime is very vulnerable to this kind of abuse. But I suspect they will have to greatly modify pricing for the developers - at least for developers like me.

      Martin and Bill

That is an interesting question. We will look into this and I am sure we will come up with a solution that solves this type of situation.

      Stay tuned.

            Richard,
I have he same issue ... 10 or so research nurses putting data into one of several databases on an occasional basis. Not a problem to have a 3-concurrent user license (which I have) - but would be a huge problem if required to license each computer from which they might put in data.

I suppose when there are so many potential workstations and so few concurrent users, WAS would be a more "sensible" option as it does not require any software to be installed on any machine other than an internet browser...

The alternative is remote desktop, with only 3 concurrent users I can't see any performance issues happening.... and it makes updating an app a lot easier than having to keep track of dozens or even hundreds of workstations...

Re: Run license changes from concurrent user to per seat

Here's another scenario. I have purchased the desktop and the 3 User RT for the last several versions. I've not sold any apps but I have donated a few every year, including one I use at work. If I understand the new pricing structure, this will no longer be possible. I either have to stay with V8 (and hope the bugs are fiped out) or look elsewhere. My employer would like nothing better than to have me go back to Access since the already have it with MS Office.

It looks like the small time developer will, as previously mentioned, be left choking in the dust.

                Oh wellllllll...........

The value of this message board and customer feedback

Firstly Best Wishes for Easter to all of the Alpha Community reading this board!

Secondly I want to thank all of you who have posted for giving us at Alpha Software the opportunity to get instant feedback on the new licensing plans. (As an aside - think about earlier times - when the feedback mechanism for companies was either non-existent or so slow to render it effectively useles. In that sense, all of us in the Alpha community are incredibly fortunate to live in this "always-on interconnected" age!)

There have been many very worthwhile and informative viewpoints, perspectives and suggestions raised.

I would like to assure everyone - that we take this feedback very seriously and also view it as a big positive. i.e. People are clearly incredibly pasionate about Alpha Five and want Alpha to have licensing/pricing policies that continue to make it attractive to build their products and businesses around.

Give us a few days to go through all this feedback and respond in a way that I am confident will make the vast majority of our developer base feel very much at ease and also will also allow you to focus on the wonderful capabilities (yes I am biased - but this is truly an astounding product) that Alpha Five v9 PLATINUM brings to you, your market place, your businesses and your business plans!

Thanks very much for hearing me out.
                  Best Regards - Richard

-- On this topic - I would like to take note of the comment below from Dr David Volgas - a long time Alpha user who posted on one of these threads as follows

it looks like a very busy week for you guys at Alpha . At least you guys are willing to listen. It's like having the ear of the small-town mayor versus trying to talk to the federal government. It's why we are so much more comfortable with Alpha through the years.

Keep it up, but don't go crazy!
                  Dave

                        Bill.

MS give you a choice of per user or per computer. When I bought the product I did not do my homework and went with per computer. Shortly after I had it up and running I realized per user was far better for me. One call ot MS and I was able to change from computer to user. I do not remember if there was any pricing diffrence.
