Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    No "SHOW" in help

When you go to HELP in V9 the SHOW in the upper left corner is missing. The SHOW will display after you select a topic. I like going straight to show and using the Index or Search from the top page in help. Was V9 help designed this way (not showing the SHOW on the main screen) or is it missing by mistake?

Philip, I noticed the same thing and have found it annoying since I, too, prefer to use the Index.

Dave, here is a snapshot of my help when it loads. You will notice there is no SHOW in the upper left corner. BTW, this is on Windows XP PRO.

          Phil,

I am using the local help instead of the web help.

          I see the difference.

I just tried in local and I get the same screen display as you did. Go to web and the SHOW is gone...I guess we have to wait on Alpha for an answer.....

Phil, the correct URL for the online help is http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...lpv9/index.htm, which is not what is shown in your screen capture. How did you arrive at your URL?

                Re: No "SHOW" in help

I downloaded the new chm help file - went from about 38MB in V8 to about 48MB in V9. If you go to the folder containing the help file, and create a shortcut on your dektop, you can also drag it to the taskbar. And it will open remembering its size and position. I prefer having it local, as it is much faster than online.

                  Phil,

I guess I am old fashioned, but I just click help from the alpha5 window as I am working and it opens right up lik I showed above.

                    Lenny,

In a5v9, if you choose web help as the help source and open help you arrive at where Phil did.

I just tried that too and Phil is right if you are using the web help.

                          Re: No "SHOW" in help

Lenny there is a difference between the 'online' and the 'local' help files. Look at the dates on the 'Learning Xbasic" pages. Local help date is March 18, 2008, (BTW the Local Help file for Version 9, says Version 9 on main screen, but Version 8 on tutorials/learning Xbasic page). The Web help file on the tutorials/learning Xbasic page is marked Verson 8 and has a date of February 22, 2007 ?
They are great help for me regardless!

There is an awful lot that needs updating in the help file. Apart from the whats new in v9 pages I can see nothing else that is updated from v8 files. None of the new comands are in the index yet
