Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Please Assist

    I am using A5V9

    Could someone advise how to get a Trimester value from a Date()

    Example: 01/01/2008 to 31/03/2008 = 1st Trimester

    I have looked throughout the help files of A5V9

    Thank you for your time

    Re: Please Assist

    Here's one way.

    Create a function like this:

    Code:
    FUNCTION Trimester AS N (vDate AS D )
    	MonthOfDate = month(vdate)
    	select
    	    case between(MonthOfDate,1,3)
    	    	Trimester = 1
    	    case between(MonthOfDate,4,6)
    	    	Trimester = 2
    	    case between(MonthOfDate,7,9)
    	    	Trimester = 3
    	end select
    END FUNCTION
    Then call the function where/as needed. In interactive, for instance, you'd get this:

    Code:
    ?trimester(date())
    = 2
    This function assumes that the current trimester starts on January 1. You may want to modify it to specify the starting date. But this'll get you started...

      Re: Please Assist

      If you just want this on one or two reports you can just create a calculated field with the expression

      Code:
      case(month(somedate)<4,"First Trimester",month(somedate)<7,"Second Trimester",month(somedate)<10,"Third Trimester",.t.,"Fourth Trimester")
      But Steve's function is quite handy.
      There can be only one.

              If you get to "Fourth Timester",
              Not sure what a "Timester" might be.

              A trimester is a three month period, of which there are four (4) in a year. The last three month period of a year would be the "Fourth Trimester".

              Trimester \Tri*mes"ter\, n. [L. trimestris of three months; tri- (see Tri-) + mensis month: cf. F. trimestre.]

              A term or period of three months.

                Trimester... as in Ist trimester of pregnancy.
                If you get to the fourth trimester, it's time to call a news conference!

                  heeheehee... I was thinking something like "semester" in relationship to school.

                    Robin,

                    Fooled me for a bit too until I thought about what the word "semester" really means....six months. But most think of it as coming from the prefix "semi-" meaning half and as a result it has taken on that meaning as well. So in that respect the word "Trimester" could very well take on a the secondary meaning that you at first thought. English language just gets more and more difficult to learn as meanings of words start to flow into each other at times...also makes it harder to be precise when such a dichotomy exists in a word's meaning.

                      No Mike that wasn't it. I was thinking semi as in 1/2 and tri as in 1/3, therefore a trimester would be a period of 4 months - 1/3 of a year (vs 3 months as Stan pointed out). Sometimes I amaze myself that my brain works right at all! The context of pregnancy totally went by me. I should take a look at a dictionary before I post.
