Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Copy text from Word to Letter

Did a search and couldn't find anything. Probably not using the correct words.

I'm trying to copy text from an MS Word letter into an Alpha letter. Nothing pastes when I use an rtf. If I use a text box it works but seems to be limited to a certain number of characters.

I'm sure there is an easy way that I'm overlooking.

    As always...thanks...john

Pasting from a Word doc should create a new rtf object. You will more than likely have to resize it so you can actually see the text. I just tried it and it does work for me, but the rtf object was very small and I had to resize it. After you resize the rtf object, double click inside of it (why? I have no idea) and your text will appear.

This will sometime work, but not always. The Alpha Five RTF object implements a small subset of the functionality of Microsoft Word.
If you copy in RTF from Word that A5's RTF object does not understand, then nothing is copied.

You might have more success putting a static HTML object on your Layout and then pasting into that.

I copy from a text file on a consistent basis to a variable that is displayed and or printed.

        Hmmm Html huh?

        Ok we will see.

I haven't tried this with A5 forms but have found the free tool PureText.exe invaluable for copying and pasting from Word in particular. It is a tiny exe that runs in your system tray and lets you paste completely without formatting using WindowsKey + V.

if you copy for a text file, you are copying informatted text, so this will work.

if you copy from word directly, you are copying formatted text. so that might work, or might fail, depending on the complexity of the text that you copied. for example, if there is a table, or an image, it will fail because a5's rtf object does not support either.

if you copy from word to notepad, then from notepad to a5 it will work, because the formatting will have been removed.

Even from Word, you can paste text without any formatting whatsoever with PureText- it works with A5 RTF files too.

The new version of PureText actually has a command line option that lets you paste completely unformatted text out of files from within xBasic too :)
