Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using Installer?

    Is this a little b-g?

When creating the Installer there is the option to use BMP and ICO files. These all work very well, what seems to me is that having saved the Install routine, not all of the graphic files get remembered. When you try to run the Installer at a later date, you get an error message that it cant find the ICO file.

Is this just me, or is it one of those little things that crawl about?

Also, how do I delete an unwanted saved Installer?

found this in the registry after making an install as a test:

    FILE=~C:\Documents and Settings\dave\Local Settings\Temp\$$163A00.MPX~ DESC=~Record-number;NAME = 'sAVEDINS' .AND. TYPE = "~

It also shows as being in the alb for the db

      Re: Using Installer?

      Hi Dave,

      Thanks for your reply.

What exactly are you trying to tell me and does this confirm or not that the Installer does not remember all the image files?

Have you tried to create an Installer with image files and saved it and then tried to re-run it after closing and re-opening the application?

no, I haven't. I use astrum instead. I don't have a lot of image files I use either.

Was hoping somebody with more experience with the installer would come in.

I was just trying to help with how you could get rid of the saved install.

          Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info regarding the saved Installer, I did not realise that was were it was saved.

Now you have kindly explained that, I shall check it out. I thought it would have been in one of the folders to do with the program or application.

I have been working on an application that I am making use of the Installer. It works very well once the EXE is created.

My problem is if you want to edit a created Installer, you have to make sure to re-include all of the graphics before you run it again.

            Re: Using Installer?

            Keith,

The exe that alpha makes is a zip file with a zip made .exe extension(not compiled i think). It opens with the viewer on my vista machine just like a zip. Alpha adds some stuff to it from what you tell it in the installer. You can see the extra files in the exe. That is all good of course, because it works.

Astrum Installer could become a great friend to you because it allows so much extra that may be needed someday and it is quite reasonable. I think 39.95. If you are going to be sending a lot of programs out, it is a blessing.
