Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FYI-Windows Ce Devices

    FYI

I use Windows CE Barcode Scanning devices (UNITECH HT660) to collect Scan in and Scan out times daily on over 600 employees. I use Visual CE applications on these devices for data collection.

By using Microsoft Active sync and Syware Visual CE-10 ODBC Drivers, I can now with Version 9, create an active link table to the barcode scanning device, Browse, append and manulipulate the data collected on the Mobile Devices without having to upload the data to an ASCII File.

    Seems to work very well.

    Thanks

Are you actually running something build in A5 (with a RT) on Windows CE then? Otherwise if you just use Visual CE, I don't really understand why you need the active link tables when Visual CE can just connect directly to the SQL database in the first place... Or do you mean you can create an active link table for desktop users, to the same DB as the one being updated from remote devices?

My read of it was that he was using the ODBC drivers so that he could access the files not using Visual CE - 2 different products.

Hm... but access them from what software (on Win CE)?

          OK:
I use active sync to connect the handheld to the computer.
I have always been able to go to mobile device and see the data.

But with version 9, I can create an active link table to the Visual Ce (.VCE) table on the handheld and then import the Visual Ce data into my Alpha5 payroll and scanning systems.
I can also manipulate the data directly on the handheld and delete records on the handheld (VCE Table) by using variables in Alpha.

Ah I see, I thought you meant it in the sense of the handheld writing directly to a central database - that makes sense now, thanks :)

              Hi Charlie

I use a similar Windows CE system for tracking testing data. I also use Visual CE for my mobile apps. I had previously connected (in V8) to my win CE tables directly on the handheld device with a passive link table just to prove to myself it could be done. I have not had a chance to get around to active link tables in V9 and Visual CE yet - good to hear you have had success with it!

              Regards,

              Jeff
