Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Considering Buying A5? Read This Please.

I also was a Foxpro programmer before making the switch to Alpha. I find Alpha MUCH easier to work with than Foxpro.

Support from the forums has been a very informative way to learn Alpha.

As to the participation of the owners, all I can say is Richard Rabins called me by phone yesterday and we spoke for almost an hour discussing my concerns about V9. During our discussion Richard revealed that he was on his way to pick up his mother. Now that is dedication not only to the Alpha 5 community, but also to his mother.

Have you ever received a call from Bill Gates? I am still in shock that he took time out of his busy schedule to talk to me.

      Steve,
My thoughts exactly. A5 is our companies secret weapon. We can create applications on the desktop and web in hours instead of days. Our competition is wondering how we do it. We have actually picked up business because they can not create the quick and inexpensive applications that we can and have them running immediately.
As I have said to Richard "You have the best product on the market today".

Re: Considering Buying A5? Read This Please.

I'm back - for another round of eval with Alpha.
[notice when I refer to the product, I can't bring myself to utter the 5 part -
but I'll explain that in another thread perhaps. ;)
          ]

The descriptions of the current product, and the assertions about web app performance have me intrigued - again. I am Always looking for tools that can help me focus on Application/Solution Building and not on all the lower level nuts and bolts that take tons of time.

For those of you building web apps with the product - for developers Exclusively doing web apps, not desktop apps - would you Still recommend Alpha? Has Alpha turned yet from a strong desktop tool with some web capabilities, to a tool that is worthy of just about Any kind of database-centric web app development?

I have 20+ year experience developing on a ton of platforms, and I have been a .NETter since day one. Is there any reason for me to leave my .NET tools behind and go here for web app development?

Version 9? Yes... The AJAX/Javascript libraries and the ability to use internal images (which until recently you could only do in desktop apps) as well as generate images with gradient backgrounds on the fly (used extensively in the themes for the new AJAX samples) and then display them in your web app really have made a HUGE difference, as have the HTML memo fields which are fantastic for storing website content etc.

            http://afas.alphasoftware.com/SamplePagesV9/#whatsnew

Additionally, the ability to write maintenance and website updater tools for the desktop in the same development software as the web app is written in also makes a big difference when compared to other platforms - hybrid apps are the way forward at least for our company :)

even If you leave aside all the ajax functionality alpha is a great tool for making professional web applications very fast.

You can make forms and searches really really fast and having to use you programming skills just for very specific reasons,

Web applications are the future of software. (almost the present)
