Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What is easist way to show user message in report

    What is easist way to show the user a message in report preview if there are no records.

    Instead of showing blank page , give use a message there are no records to print

    "Easiest way" depends on part in how you're producing the report.

    Nearly all of my stuff happens via Xbasic.

    One way, depending on how long the query would take, is to run a query and branch depending on the number of records in the query. A snippet might look like this:

    Code:
    query.order = "someOrder"
    query.filter = "somefilter"
    qdx = t.query_create()
    if qdx.records_get() = 0
      msgbox("Sorry", "No records to report.")
    else
      report.preview("myreport", query.filter, query.order)
    end if

      You can select the default "no Records" message under Settings > Preferences > Reports, although of course that is only for your own copy...

        Andrea,
        I REALLY was hoping your were incorrect in this as it makes no sense then to even have this as a preference for many applications. I did some testing and it is only used ON the computer it is chosen for---it does NOT get transferred via an install for a runtime either which I assumed incorrectly that it would. I would guess that this applies to all the settings then that can be changed...which some (hope all) should be able to be changed by xbasic so that runtimes can have the settings wanted in any application that is used outside one's own computer without having to manually set them.

        Guess I have some checking to do sometime....

          I have a feeling this is something you can probably set via Xbasic in the startup file... if it isn't already, then it SHOULD be :)

            Re: What is easist way to show user message in report

            The autoexec could be used where xbasic would write to the registry where most likely these are entered ...but I did find this in the help

            http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...l/Settings.htm

            But do seem to remember a thread regarding the .view_settings.dbf and that it was not required .......

            Still checking this out but can't for a while now....later...

              Hi again....I couldn't leave with this unanswered!! :)

              http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...r_settings.htm

              Finding the above in the help I was able to easily set the "pre-calculate record count" using xbasic:
              Code:

              'initialize the UserSettings variable
              UserSettings.dummy = ""
              :registry.LOAD_SETTINGS("preferences",UserSettings)
              UserSettings.Reports.Pre_calc_Record_Count = "Yes"
              :registry.SAVE_SETTINGS("preferences",UserSettings)
              All the settings can be set using this method.
              This could easily be used in the autoexec script, on a form's field to maybe have it equal a value in a table if maybe different users wanted different settings, or....

                Re: What is easist way to show user message in report

                I note there are 2 (preferences and init) - are there any more?

                UserSettings.dummy = ""
                :registry.LOAD_SETTINGS("preferences",UserSettings)
                :registry.LOAD_SETTINGS("init",UserSettings)

                with these 2, looks like with a bit of work one could easily set all the users settings in the autoexec, and maybe keep track of it, so it only ran once, and then maybe a function in a utilities menu to reset

                  Martin,
                  Anything that is located in the registry for Alpha is fair game here I believe--just pick one and choose.
                  For instance I just used this--

                  Code:

                  UserSettings.dummy = ""
                  :registry.LOAD_SETTINGS("A5_System_Fonts",UserSettings)
                  UserSettings.auto_help.font="Tahoma,6"
                  :registry.SAVE_SETTINGS("A5_System_Fonts",UserSettings)
                  and it changed the font from 10 to 6.
